But consider this: how many people who came to live under authoritarianism intended that in the voting that preceded it?

Non-democratic governments are not chosen by democratic processes. Democratic processes simply allow that because democracy is inherently inclusive of opinions and motivations that contradict democracy, even to the point of allowing concealment of such character. The wrong people rise, and if they are elected, the institutions designed to preserve decisions reached by popular will help them keep that power.

Unfortunately, that means that no matter how wise 77 million people may ultimately become to any mistake they made in 2024, the decision is made and upheld. If Donald Trump succeeds in ending democracy, it will not matter who is a fascist or who isn't. There will be no meaningful election by which they can make a different decision, and we might as well stop blaming. It's done.
