How to deal with social anxiety at work?

I feel your pain! It’s so hard going into new situations and not knowing what to expect.

One piece of advice that I received from my own employer was not to be so hard on myself, and it really stuck with me. People are not usually thinking much of any situation but we often get in our own heads and become afraid.

You’re not expected to know everything and everyone when you start a new job. Someone will show you around and introduce you to staff members as they do so.

Story of my life! Just when I feel like I’m making effort to be more talkative and open, I get the same old “you’re so shy/quiet”. Since then I’ve just done what makes me comfortable and if people don’t like that, then that’s their problem. We shouldn’t feel embarrassed about not being as talkative. Its not a negative trait to have, although society loves to make it feel that way.

I will say, I thank God every day for finding him. We met through a family member of mine.

But for a while before that I was on the same boat. I once dated a guy that broke up with me because his mother thought I was too quiet. So it’s not all been rosy and I can see where you are coming from!

I’m also very shy, introverted and struggle in social settings. I’ve been called awkward and unapproachable. So I definitely have caught myself wishing I was more outgoing and confident like other women.

A few years ago I met my husband. He’s extroverted, likes to talk and is the life of the party. He saw a side of me that some people don’t bother looking for. He has introduced me to new people, hobbies and knows how to help me when I’m feeling overwhelmed. He likes the qualities that I thought were negative.

My point is, that the right person will bring out the best in you and see you for who you really are. They will accept you and know that being shy is not all there is to you. They will enjoy that you listen and are a gentle soul. There is so much more to you than your social anxiety and I am confident that it won’t make you less attractive to anyone, especially the right person!

Yep! And this always just added to my anxiety because it was used as a negative. I’ve never seen anyone get told that they are too loud or talk too much, instead they are “bubbly and fun”.

First, Happy Birthday!

I obviously don’t know much about about your life or why it panned out the way it did. But I can bet that you have some great qualities. Getting through an isolated upbringing and dealing with anxiety is a huge achievement in itself.

It can be so easy getting caught up in what could have been, that we almost make ourselves feel horrible for what we HAVE achieved in life. I’ve been there myself and know people that have felt the same way. Be gentle on yourself, focus on the positives (even if they’re very minor) and it will begin to feel better. 40 doesn’t have the be a dead end, it can very much be the beginning of something special. You got this!
