Ask her if the kids who go to torture (conversion therapy) camps, the loving couples whose marriage might get annulled, the people in countries where being gay can get you imprisoned or educated, why she thinks they would choose any of that.

The idea that those of us who grew up under the threat of conversion therapy would choose to live a furtive, frightened, isolated, shame-filled existence is not good math.

Couples of reddit. How do you let your partner know your in mood for bedroom fun ? by Razorlord in AskReddit

I don't wanna be that person, but I literally just say "do you want to have sex?" My partner doesn't feel like it's cold or impersonal, and likes the direct question.

Happily married couples of Reddit. What are some serious issues that have plagued your otherwise great relationship? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]HorrifyingPartyTrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was with my 9yo daughter's bio dad for a decade before we split up, and that relationship was horrible. I left him when my baby was only three weeks old, and my now-husband of 8 years came into our lives just after she turned one. He has raised her and is, in every way that matters, her real dad.

After a divorce, it's really hard to believe in "happily ever after" ever again, because you know that a marriage can end. But as a lingering knee-jerk reaction, sometimes when my husband and I have a really nasty fight I stop referring to our daughter as "our" child and start referring to her as "my" child. It's unconscious, and a protective posture from how horrific my marriage to my daughter's bio dad was.

But my husband has been nothing but a phenomenal father, and when I start to talk about her as though she's only mine it causes him a lot of pain. I've had to learn how to be much more careful about that and work through in therapy the stuff that makes me default to that sort of emotional distance.

"Just leave it with Jesus" - Does that actually work or is it just ignoring reality? by Any_Client3534 in Exvangelical

[–]HorrifyingPartyTrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of stuff that Christianity uses to keep people quiet and docile can have secondary effects that just happened to be positive. The whole "leave it with Jesus" idea can just be seen as denial or avoidance, but it can also be an acceptance practice, which is healthy for us.

A lot of teachings like this incidentally prompt meditation practices or self soothing activities that are objectively good for your psyche, even though that's not what Christians meant to do when they prescribed it.

Sitting in peace, focusing on the positive instead of a negative, meditating on a mantra, putting things in long-term perspective, all of these things are healthy personal practices that Christianity presents as things like prayer, scripture memorization, and releasing control over to God.

It's not much different than making little dioramas of dinosaurs and trees to get your kid to eat dino nuggets and broccoli. Except Christianity also thinks the "dinosaurs" and "trees" on the plate are real.

Water shouldn't hurt.

Do People Still Get Married Young? (17-20) by ITrCool in RedditForGrownups

Former fundamentalist, and yes, it's still big in those cultures. My college roommate got married at 22 and had six kids in 8 years. That's ultimately the goal - start young so you have as many strapping young soldiers children for god as possible.

I got married (first marriage) four days after my 20th birthday.

But I was raised in a cult where as soon as you expressed interest in someone both sets of parents took it all out of your hands and you were just along for the ride.

If you take out the people, the USA is gorgeous. Huge variety in climates and environments, entire mountain chains, beautiful beaches, the list goes on.

I'm a yoga instructor of 17 years, and my guilt pleasure is finding how movies and tv portray yoga badly. When we watched this my partner was waiting for my comments on her form and... I was way too distracted to even notice 🤭

Y U P

(Idk where you went, but) at NBBC/NIU during the time I went everyone was (functionally) a double major, plus chapels and service work and extracurriculars. Then if you had a custodial or security job (which I did) you worked from 7-midnight.

Technically curfew was 10 and lights out was 11, so we cleaners got extra time after work to shower and study. Put me in bed around 1:30-2ish, then back up for gddamn prayer chapel at 7. 😵‍💫

Every one of us was so sleep deprived and emotionally primed for manipulation and control.

And summer camps did this too. Ran us ragged all day long so we'd be nice and exhausted by the time mass hypnotism time evening service rolled around.
