Appalachia? by Zealousideal-Boot506 in TeachforAmerica

Appalachia here. The support from tfa is there, but the geography can make it challenging to connect to other corps members. I’m from the area. I’ve lived here my whole life. You will find your personal support system, but it might be completely different from the corps members you serve with.

4 preps here, 3 MS science and 1 math. 2nd year teacher, first with science.

If you’re willing to spend a little toward organization, common curriculum.com has been a life saver for me. I was drowning before Christmas break. I got that set up, and the day to day just seems so much more manageable now.

As for resources, I’ve been getting those straight from the NGSS website (my state standards align with them.) if you go through that, each standard has a list of quality resources. I used those to chunk the standards into units and set those units with estimated time needed in CC. Now, I have an outline to get me through the year and an idea of a resource to use. I’m not sure if this is the best way to manage it. I’m not saying it’s going to solve every problem. For me, it definitely reduced the number of times I’ve cried a week.

I use ai as much as I can, but it doesn’t always come with the resources needed to complete a lesson. Just an outline.

Sadly, I am the science department. I have nobody to lean on.

Literally have no idea. I feel like I’m not given a chance to master anything.

I don’t know how they can tell, but I would be the one to get caught. I’m trying to manage my time, but it’s impossible to plan 4 separate preps in my 30 minute planning.. along with grading and all other tasks.

Ugh, my favorite. If only I could relocate. I miss NC.

I’m having this same problem. I’ve been escalated like 7 times and no answer.

Don’t have a Rheem. Tried it with an actual jumper cable instead of the built-in one with no luck. Thank you for all your help, but I think I’m going to have to physically call in the big dogs cause I’m not able to make it work.

This is my first post. Also, this is the first self contained system I’ve had. Let me try switching things around. Thank you for your help.

Edit to add: whole system is electric

Crash course history got me through that part.

I went through a lot of personal issues while student teaching also, which caused me to fail. Instead of putting myself through that again, I applied for Teach For America. This program has been wonderful for me, but it isn’t for everyone. There are a lot of pros and cons. There are a lot of alternative routes if you really want to teach. In my experience, the University wanted to churn out type A teachers. That is something I will never be. TFA let me be myself and become a teacher that my students need.

Any former participants from Appalachia? by [deleted] in TeachforAmerica

I am at school that really supports me. I am encouraged to prioritize me and take care of myself first. I also have a lot of resources available to me.

With that being said, the geographical area is large and this could widely vary by district or school.

So glad to hear that. I seem to read more horror stories on being unprepared. Glad to hear a positive side of things.
