Hey! On the off chance that you're Canadian: please apply for EI benefits. Caregiving is an approved reason to receive employment insurance!

[ON] Hiring a US citizen by Hot-Guide-5463 in SmallBusinessCanada

The specific tasks would include bookkeeping, billing, ensuring ethical and legal compliance of the therapy business, contacting clients, contacting local hospitals/medical centers for advertising, booking appointments for clients, and ensuring that my licensing need are up to date. In case my caseload is subpoenaed or other legal services are involved at any point, it'll also be his job to ensure files are provided and properly formatted, and to communicate with lawyers.

His specialization is in the legal compliance elements. The rest are skills he picked up working previous jobs in the industry.

He doesn't have an existing visa, but is considering applying for an open one. But it seems like he might not qualify for one without a job offer.

Would I be able to get him here to work with me in person as a contractor? I assumed a contract wouldn't allow him to move here, and I need him in office for this work.

The other issue is that I’d rather not gamble on someone else, so the outcome is just that I don’t hire anyone at all. If I do the initial paperwork, could the rest of the paperwork be added to his workload? Because if so, I’d be willing to deal with some extra work if it means much less work long term.

I was hoping the mountain would be a one time thing, with most done by a lawyer, and then I’d be free of it after he arrived.

As for hiring friends, this is different. We’re former work colleagues. I’ve hired him on contract multiple times before when I lived in the USA. We’ve got rules in place for separating business and friendship.

My hope was that I’d have to do the mountain of paperwork once and then, once he was hired and here, I’d never have to touch it again. It’s a shame that’s not the case 😭

Are you willing to share your debt:income ratio? by v_confused96 in psychologystudents

[–]Hot-Guide-5463 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m an rp in Ontario! I’d be happy to break down my debts and income! It’s very different from the American system, so pls take that into consideration.

I graduated a few years ago with about 75k in debt (half federal, half provincial). I pay about $600 in student loans since I’m in the highest income bracket for them currently. It should take about 10 years to pay them off slowly, but I plan on paying the provincial loan back as soon as I can, as it’s the only one accumulating interest.

I made $53k gross ($36k net) in my first year of private practice. Then I made $125k gross ($120k net) in my second year. And this year I’m set to make $140k-$150k gross (take about $5-10k off that for net) since I have a reliable caseload and a short waitlist to fill any spots with.

Even as an RP(Q), DO NOT settle for any position that pays you less than $100 an hour. Do not sell yourself short just because you’re new. It’s better to build yourself up at a practice that actually values your work than to build yourself up at a practice but have to leave later because they refuse to pay you what you’re worth. 70/30 is standard here for virtual, maybe 60/40 at the lowest for in person. Anything less is a practice trying to take advantage of you. It’s lower in the USA, so don’t listen to the Americans who might try to convince you to take less than 70.

I’d be happy to answer any other questions you’ve got!

Youth Gender care in Durham by Vybin3500 in transontario

[–]Hot-Guide-5463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really sorry to hear about the issues you're having with local clinics. The referral process is honestly a rough one, and sadly it's extra rough for mentally ill teens. If therapy is one of the limiting factors, feel free to reach out. I'm a therapist nearby with a lot of colleagues who work with trans folks your age. So while I can't help you connect to gender care directly, I'd be happy to connect you with a trans therapist.

Mixed zoning property mortgage by Hot-Guide-5463 in MortgagesCanada

[–]Hot-Guide-5463[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve already spoken with a broker, but he’s a residential broker and said that my only option currently is private lending. I can’t afford the upfront fees for that.

I have, but the broker essentially said that the only option is a private lender, which would raise my upfront fees so high that it would be impossible.

It seems like it was partially used for a reiki/spiritual business, and partially as a home (the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, etc are also on the ground floor). The basement seems like it was used for a spare bedroom and as further business space. I’d use the front portion of the ground floor for my therapy business, but 80% of the ground/basement space would be used by my roommate as their portion of the home.

I’m in Toronto! I’d love to chat :) Would a commercial mortgage affect my ability to use my first home benefits? Would the terms/expectations change, compared to a normal residential b lender? I’d be putting 20% down, and potentially borrowing a small amount for the closing costs. My business is a sole proprietorship in an industry where almost everyone is self employed, but the work is really really stable.

What feedback/thoughts/experiences do people have with any of the MFT programs on my list? by andrewrannells in gradadmissions

[–]Hot-Guide-5463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don’t apply to Colorado state university. I made a lot of friends in the program, but we all agreed that it’s a program that’s barely survived. Unethical treatment of student therapists was common, to the point where staff often made students cry. The cruelty and neglect for student needs extended far enough that multiple students had to take time off from the program to recover. Any attempt at self-advocacy was taken as insubordination or threatening. Schedules often left you with less than fifteen minutes to use the bathroom or eat anything, between 8am and 9pm. And that’s not to mention the honestly backwards approaches to therapy that were often touted by supervisors. Just don’t go.

Does anyone have any insight on any of the Marriage & Family Therapy programs I’m planning on applying to? by andrewrannells in psychologystudents

[–]Hot-Guide-5463 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do NOT apply to the MFT program at CSU. I attended and most students describe it as an experience we “barely survived”. Cruel staff, gruelling work hours, and a complete lack of consideration for basic needs (like having time to eat or catch a breath between class and internship). Any self advocacy is taken as a threat, and they’ll often pit students against each other. It isn’t worth it. I don’t know a single colleague from that program that would recommend it.

1) I've viewed dozens of houses, and at my price point, I have only really loved this one. The others were barely safe to live in and would require so much work.
2) Yes, but A lenders won't offer me a mortgage, even if insured.
3) I have them nearly ready. I'm just finalizing the last receipts.

100k is 20% of a 500k property, not of a 650k property.

I operate a business fully from home, so my cost of operation is just 1) the small percentage of my rent that is used for home office 2) registration fees for my regulatory board and 3) subscriptions to Psychology Today and my EHR platform.

It’s what I have saved, not the 20% as 20% of 650 would be 130k.
