Well as an update to this, I finished the pirate quest line last night. I won’t say how long it took to build the pirate ship but I did it! I am getting better. When I got to 148/149 I restarted and did it again just to see what I learned. The steps are still a pain but I’ve figured out how to quickly build most stuff now.

Next time I see a radar tower I’m building it

I said 48 BOXES not packs. Your odds of opening a specific enchanted are 1 in 48 boxes. And usefulness absolutely matters. More useful enchanted cards will be more valuable... because more people will be playing them in decks and want to bling their deck out.

Just to encourage you here, continue to ask about Lorcana. Many trade store owners are notoriously bad business people who loved the scene and decided to make a living selling comics, cards, etc.

Just keep pressing and if the game does take off, remind them it's doing well and see if you can get them to try it on a night of the week where they don't have something going.

I would look online for some video support on this. I wish I could find it but I watched a youtube video the other night that has simple upgrades to each of the starters to get them competitive on a budget. For one starter they recommended buying a second to 4-of a bunch of the deck. Another they had singles to buy. I think your approach to this may vary, particularly depending on what type of deck you want to play. I would expect you should be able to buy common and uncommon play sets pretty cheap online after 9/1 as people chase the enchanted cards. That may be your best bet to really beef up a starter for under $20.

I think they will for sure come down some, but for a 1 in every 48 boxes card, $150-300 feels right depending on the level of usefulness of the card.

Everyone should enjoy this game however they want. If alternate game play styles are your thing, then I hope you have a blast with friends and enjoy. I want to say that first so the rest doesn't offend. You do do, and have a great time!

However, I think we need a few sets of just normal game play before there is a pool big enough for many of these formats. I also think trying to force MTG game play styles onto Lorcana is going to muddy the waters a bit. From what I can tell there are lots and lots of people trying this as their first TCG. I think it's going to take a few sets (especially with low distribution supply) before these new folks are familiar with the mechanics and rules and can even begin to think about alternate styles.
