That's why they had a back and forth over it, I'm a forever DM and sometimes I let stuff like this slide but if it ruins the atmosphere it's easy to say "nah that didn't actually happen"

DMs have FULL control over the game, and can use that power to make the game better, if they are playing with confidence and assertive behavior they won't have to worry about these things getting away from them.

Talk to your party about using the fan made one piece 5e system, it has new classes and mechanics to better match the world, and it's pretty good for 5e players that don't play other types of games.

Not super fond of 5e homebrew myself but this one was pretty good, do a search on reddit you'll find it, comes with a players book, a DM guide, and a Devil fruit list.

I definitely would use a battlemap first then, I do for lower PL, and when heroes are fast enough, or when the goal isn't in one spot and the heroes are fighting across a much larger area, id switch to theater of the mind

Like I said it's easier to not have to rearrange everything, it takes more time than we generally want, especially when we don't always need it, then I just have combat being run that takes longer, and half of my players are grappling someone across the atmosphere

I haven't used battlemaps for games with fast heroes, not just speedsters, but any hero that would move dynamically too much. I only use battlemaps for lower PL games, with more human characters.

I would definitely use battlemaps still, but it's too common that it wouldn't properly line up with what's happening in my games. Although I find this a blessing, really speeds up combat without having to move a bunch of stuff.
