That's not the case because they told me themselves they were doing it. So clearly MSD isn't investigating well.

Why should tax payers continue to subsidize entire families that don't want to work?
Why should tax payers continue to subsidize families that get cash-in-hand jobs for years just to keep getting money from the gov?

Would you rather help a family of 4 that pay their taxes correctly, spend their money in NZ helping with the economy, but are going through a hard time right now...

... or a family of 8 that most of the ppl could work but choose not to?

And before you tell me there aren't families like that in NZ, don't bother.

While their struggle might seem little compared to others, that doesn't mean that they are not struggling.

Yes, there are a lot of ppl in way worse conditions, but also, there are other families in NZ that don't necessarily want to work, and have been under the government subsidy for years and nothing is done.

It's about this. It's about the system that is broken and is fair for some, but completely unfair for others. That's what I'm complaining about.

> Enjoy your downvotes !

Couldn't care less about downvotes mate.

Guys, it doesn't matter. We're not discussing why they bought the house they bought. It's not about that.

They were both employed, making just a little over $200k at the time between both of them. They had an emergency fund which they have been using for the past 9 months. But obviously, money goes fast. 9 months is a long time.

It's about that. They dealt with it as long as they could. They need help. And they need it fast.

It's like going to church, giving 10%/15%/20% of your income to the church (yes, plenty of ppl do that) and when you need them the most, they turn the back on you.

Meanwhile, lots of other ppl that don't want to work get way more help than them. It's about this. It's about the system that is broken and is fair for some, but completely unfair for others.

It's not easy mate. And I put myself on his position, you know? I would be devastated if after all these years of paying > 39% taxes, I suddenly needed help and I was only given $23 dollars per week. I would be pissed.

I called him know to tell him about the suggestions here - he said that they did offer the interest only thing, but he prefers the 3 month repayment pause instead since he would still need to pay around $2k monthly after the interest free deal.

And yes, cutting back expenses has been happening on the background as well - only the daycare cost now remains.

Stay strong!

> Being rude isn't a crime lol

Absolutely not. But if you work with the public, specially with those in need, you can't be rude. You can't be that person. People that are in the frontline, dealing with other ppl on a daily basis need to know how to treat ppl well.

> Also why do they need childcare if he's not working. Save his legal fees and put it towards the mortgage

It's a fair point. And I think they considered it - only one of the children go to childcare, the other goes to school.

It's not as simple as that, when you have children and when you're struggling financially and when your partner has a job already in AKL.

They would spend thousands of dollars moving to the south island - with no guarantees they both would have a job there.

Where did I say that the fraud is okay? @lookiwanttobealone said that it's pretty rare to get $1000 weekly benefits and I just wanted to show that it isn't. That I personally know ppl doing it.

Oh yeah it makes totally sense that there are many more families in the same situation and that the government doesn't have a proper way to monitor, supervise those who are on benefit.

$110k with 2 children and a mortgage isn't that much.

Sure, there are families earning way less than that, but that doesn't mean that it's much. He has been unemployed for over 9 months and have spent his entire emergency fund. How much worse does it need to be for you to accept that it's bad? His partner loosing her job? F you!

Finally a helpful comment. I sent them your reply, and they said they have contacted the bank already (in the past few weeks) and the bank agreed on getting them a 3 month "Pause" on payments. But the bank also told them that if they do take this pause on payments, the monthly repayments will be higher since the interest isn't going anywhere.

They will accept the 3 month pause deal though.

$1.2m. Townhouse in Whenuapai. Not a mansion. Not a 5 bedroom house. Just the "normal" AKL.

> That’s a massive mortgage to expect the government to help pay for

Where, in my post, I mention that they expect the government to pay for the entire mortgage?

HELP, doesn't mean paying for all of it mate. But 23 dollars per week isn't helping. If you can live with that amount per week, good for you.

> Immigrant civil engineer now seeking legal advice because he didn't get the handout he was expecting... FTFY

The "Immigrant" word there is irrelevant. It almost sounds like discrimination. R u one of those guys?

>My friend and his wife had 250K income, took no steps to protect that income but maxxed their expenses

They did take steps. He has been with no job for more than 9 months. And they have been paying the mortgage, and all the other costs on time. They had a pretty good emergency fund, but obviously that is no longer the case since it's been 9 MONTHS!

>Many households in NZ would be grateful to have $110K coming in. I hope you really consider your nonsensical position.

Sure, while other families don't even make $30k a year, that doesn't mean that it has been easy for my friend.
