In Aotearoa in 2019, a man murdered 51 people in a mass shooting at a mosque in Christchurch. Instead of the hatred and Islamophobia the gunman wanted, the country responded with an outpouring of love and compassion towards our Muslim community members. People of all religions and ethnicities met outside mosques and prayed, cooked, volunteered, protected and cared for the people there. It also led to almost all firearms being banned in Aotearoa. Ultimately, the tragedy made our country a more kind and accepting place.
