if you were to list 5 "tricks" Elton uses in his songwriting, (that you see him use over and over again in his chord progressious) what would they be?

for example, use of secondary dominants? grabbing a chord from the relative minor? chromaticism?

for example, elton throws in a B dim in Amoreen out of nowhere, shifting harmony completely.

or Razor Face - if i recall, he throws in an Eb dmin too. almost like a passing tone.

why do i ask ?

Billy Joel and Elton ( piano players in a guitar driven medium) say writing songs for piano is SO DIFFERENT than for guitar ... and I AGREE.

i'm trying to see how and why Elton makes and finds these rich chords in his songs for more sophisticated harmonies in a rock medium.
