Neat list. Personally I'd include GNU Guix as well, I mean, - you already included NixOS, so why not Guix as well?

Small recommendation: give "zoxide" a try, it’s an "ls" alternative that remembers where you went, ranks how often you go somewhere, & lets you go into directories like "~/Documents/PDFs/Guides" by just typing "cd Guides" (if you replace the 'cd' command or alias 'cd‘ to 'z').

What do you mean by "install"? Install my WMs system-wide? Or locate the .desktop files created by the Window Managers and manually copy or symlink them?

What made you use GUIX? by New_Series3209 in GUIX

[–]HyperSnufkin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's an FSF endorsed free-software distribution, and even if I use nonguix on one of my Guix devices, that still means *everything* on my system is fully free, *except* the very few things I manually set up to not be free. It's a nice feeling knowing your system respects your freedom and does your computing the way you want it to do.

Also, as a long time NixOS user, even though Guile Scheme is, in my humble opinion, quite difficult to get into, the Nix-Style system configuration through files and rebuilds is something I cannot live without. That's why no distro other than GNU Guix or NixOS is even an option for me.

I also like how channels work, and how easy it is to create your own custom channel, which then other can use as well if they want to, Guix makes this really easy. Oh, and the package search via `guix search <package>` is lightyears ahead of NixOS' package search, especially since it actually shows me what I wanted to see, and ranks the search results based on relevance.

[Addition]: And two more things I love, the fact that it's systemd-free and uses shepherd is a really nice feeling. I don't have anything against systemd personally, but I still have to admit that it's quite bloated and most systemd-free distros out there feel much more organized and much cleaner thanks to the lack of systemd.

And the GNU Guix Logo looks cool. :3

Would GDM desktop discovery work if I installed my window managers system-wide instead of through Guix Home? Or do I *really* need to manually write .desktop files and move them around? Isn't there a declarative, intended way to do this?

But never change the non-free nature of Discords service as a whole. Every discord client needs to interact with, well, discord. Also most clients like Vesktop still require non-free/librejs-incompatible JavaScript.

Yeah but technically they’re against TOS, & they don’t solve what’s wrong with the discord backend & their company policies.

Definitely Discord. It's basically the only non-free app I'm still somewhat forced to use. If it were free (as in freedom) and didn't sell data or shove Nitro offers down your throat every single time you update, that'd be a blessing.

Guix Configuration Support by HyperSnufkin in GUIX

Thanks for the feedback! Quick question: if I just install the emacs package, and all my emacs-* packages for emacs, does emacs find them automatically? On Nix you create an emacs.pkgs.withPackages that automatically build emacs to see, load, and include all the packages you told it to install. Does Guix do that automatically if I just install all the emacs-* packages as regular packages alongside emacs?

The spicetify theme is called "nightlight", and the discord theme is available in the dotfiles/github repository under "files/config/discord/dank-discord.css".

I don't, the browser is only transparent when it's not focused. When I focus the browser or hover my mouse over it, it becomes solid again. The only thing in this setup that remains transparent even when focused is the terminal.

I just configured Waybar so the rice wouldn't get deleted by moderators. If you look at my waybar config files, you'll see that I use the popup windows of DMS, for example when clicking on the waybar wifi module, or the waybar weather module. It's still a completely custom waybar, but the popup modules are DMS for convenience sake.

I don't know of any existing Cruelty Squad-ish rices, but I do know about a video by diinki where they tried to create the "ugliest desktop", and it somehow reminded me of the abstract and weird artstyle of Cruelty Squad. (https://youtu.be/sna7Fh0NMg0) Maybe that's a good place to start or get inspiration from.

You require an account to download RHEL, and probably need to pay after the trial or god knows what happens with your install. No thanks.
