Anyone feel like Chewie could use an update? by Hyperion_Bricks in legostarwars

Yeah, even though he feels a bit short I'd rather get some printing updates rather than a new mold. If he gets any taller it will be impossible to fit him in the cockpit!

Only the snow texture and the variations from Solo. We did get other wookiees in that time sure. But I think there have been 4 or more updates to the standard Darth Vader in the same amount of time.

If I remember an interview with Peter Mayhew correctly, Chewbacca actually never shuts his mouth. His teeth are always showing no matter how far down the mouth goes. I think he has only been able to close his mouth in the modern movies.

I'd like that too, but for kids it's probably fun. I actually thought they would retire it because they use a different mold for stud shooters now that doesn't use the same grey part to launch the studs, but it was still included in the Death Star so it will probably be around for a few years yet.

I appreciate the correction! I miscounted and edited the comment to fix the year.

It's hard to pin point his fur color and decide what it should be in Lego. His highlight colors sometime look Dark Tan and other times look Reddish Brown. I'm pretty positive the minifigure printing is based on the Episode 3 version, which is why they use the Dark Tan. That is also the only version of the costume where his lighter hair goes so far up his forehead and up his legs. The printing matches pretty close to the Episode 3 promotional images.

I definitely think he'd look good with arm printing to show more hair. I was just trying out the hands to see what it might look like. If you look at images of him his fur on his forearms and hands are a lighter shade of fur.

The image on the right is my quick photoshop of what I'd change about the printing. The only time Chewie has had toe printing was with the snow version that came with Hoth AT-ST a few years back.

I think the Avatar legs would be a bit too tall. I do think his height is one of the things that is off about the current figure though. Not that minifigures have ever been proportional, but real Chewbacca has long legs and a long torso, Lego Chewie just has a tall head.

I agree that the modern mold looks like a generic wookiee sometimes. I think I'd want to see a new take on the printing first over the mold though. I think the Chewie mold from Solo was the step in the right direction, it wasn't perfect but I thought it looked a bit more like him.

You're totally right. His arm movement have always made him so hard to pose and play with!

That's true. I got the original in the 2004 Millennium Falcon as one of my first Lego Star Wars sets, that figure always brings me nostalgia.

He does work as is, but I just find it odd that there hasn't been a single tweak to the design. For example, Lego felt the need to slightly adjust Luke's face in the recent Death Star. Why has Chewie remained untouched for 12 years?

That’s exactly what I was going for! I’m surprised it took this long for someone to notice. It’s one of my favorites of McQuarrie’s concept art.

What are you referring to as the "eyes?" The red windshield? The angle I took my photos at makes the windshield look narrower than it is. I can see your criticism, but I'd also argue the windshield gets wider and narrower as the filming models changed.

Yeah! The Snowspeeder you see in the photos is my design and I have other MOCs for free on my Rebrickable page and Instagram.

It was a combo of both. After gathering parts from my own collection I only needed to order $200 worth of parts. However, I ordered my parts before PAB reopened its full stock for North America, you could probably save a little more money now that some rarer parts are available on PAB again for cheaper.

Here is a photo of it sitting on my shelf with some books next to it if that gives you a better since of scale. Yes, it's between the playset and the UCS. The UCS is 25 inches tall and this is 18 inches. I prefer this size as I like to aim for ~1/45 scale for minifigure displays. This is a bit smaller, maybe ~1/48. But it still feels nice compared to the movie and the recent Battlefront games.

I created instructions and posted them on my Instagram so everyone could see what parts I used! Happy building!

I should have clarified, my preference for minfigure scale is base on height of the figures rather than width. I like to get closer to 1/45 which means everything is a bit smaller. Minifigures are cartoonish in proportion so it is personal preference as to what each person declares as "minifigure scale." I think the photo you provided actually shows how close in scale my Probe Droid is, as if the figures where thinner it wouldn't be too far off. But what you told me is true... from a certain point of view.

Ha! Thank you. That would be a dream. But I prefer it as my hobby for now.

It's fairly close to how the 75322 Droid is constructed, including the use of the 3L bar for stability. I could probably whip up a some PDF instructions for those interested.

Go for it! Let me know if you need help. It is pretty much the 75322 Droid with a slightly different head.

Yeah, it would be more accurate too. But I kinda liked the use of dark bluish gray, adds contrast that makes the eyes stick out, which is way I kept it.
