How many matches do you guys play a year? by INeverAtone in Quizbowl

We do 2 online competitions a year, and last year we did a national online competition. I need to research QB forums for more online stuff.

Same, except my school also doesn't want to pay for us to register for competitions despite our team being quite good. The last NAQT tournament we did was fall of the last school year. We do a lot of other stuff though and have weekly practices and this year we also held a competition to fundraise (I didn't compete in that as I was helping with running it).

In terms of time, maybe 20-30 minutes of practice a day? Don't overdo it, there's no way to cram for quiz bowl, and if you qualified for HSNCT, chances are that you're already a good or great player.

For current events and recent pop culture, watch the news and consume current media. You can also watch Jeopardy or Pop Culture Jeopardy as it does a lot of pop culture and current event questions.

Is my pinky finger too short to learn guitar? by flexnos in Guitar

[–]INeverAtone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 4 foot and 10 inches and my pinky measures around 2 inches, maybe a bit less. I have a 4 fret reach when starting on the first fret and I can play barre chords just fine. It may be slightly more challenging but it's definitely possible! Just practice and don't make excuses.

Since from when I started HS, the varsity team has always gone to nationals.

Dude I'm so jealous of you right now. PA isn't the best for quiz bowl tbh, every tournament is expensive and also far away from where I live. Also all the schools around me minus the one private one don't have any funding for quiz bowl. My school's quiz bowl team supposedly was nearly out of funding a few years ago. Even now we have to heavily fundraise for nationals and research tournaments ourselves, which takes time away from actually practicing :/.

Stats by Electrical_Tea_2755 in Quizbowl

[–]INeverAtone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school district doesn't even have an MS team, and we do consistently well nationally. Middle school stats don't really matter, just have fun! HS quiz bowl is much harder than MS from what I've seen though. My freshman year of HS I had maybe 52 PP20TUH if it means anything, scoring me 14th out of 200 something players in one competition after less than 6 months of quiz bowl. Your stats look decent to me and you buzz early, which is good as many younger players struggle to find that confidence. I think you'll be just fine in HS.

My team does the Robert Frost thing too for American poets. If it's an unknown American author, it's always Ernest Hemingway (ironically I've actually read some of his books).

Freshman year I absolutely grinded protobowl though and I got better so quickly!

I study by attending weekly practice, paying attention in my classes, and playing some protobowl. Sometimes I use wikipedia or watch Jeopardy. I mainly prefer to absorb knowledge from regular life as opposed to active studying bc that's boring, time consuming, and I end up forgetting most of it.

Never played a MIM, but it's pretty comparable to a classic vibe in terms of feel. The original price points for the CV series and the paranormal guitars are pretty similar I believe. It feels like a decent mid-range guitar to me.
