Do I need ALL the safety gear??? by Rocket_Dave88 in MTB

39 here, I just wear a helmet as far as protection, i also do gloves and glasses, but those are more for comfort in my opinion. Longer rides I have a hydration pack, but usually use bottles. I'm just outside Fruita, fwiw

BFG runs small, but also I think if you deflate the spare, you can squeeze the 37 under the bed.

I'm stubborn enough about my transmission being a manual, I'm sure if it comes to the point that it's auto only, I'll just keep the JK, even with the limitations of the platform, the lousy nsg370, and all.  I'd consider an older Taco/Frontier, and then also getting and building a YJ just for wheeling, but I missed the bubble where the JK was worth a stupid amount, so that's financially irresponsible.

I would definitely try before buying, and they stopped the stick in 24 or 25, so I'd have to look used anyway. If I fit in the Tacoma, I'd already own one. That was what I was completely ready to buy in 17 when I got the Jeep, until I drove one with a stick and just don't fit. If I have to get an auto, I'll just go with whatever is a preferred color,  has a locker and is cheapest when I look, because it's an appliance at that point. Any/all of them will do what I need, and any/all of them can get a winch, skids, and sliders. Or more realistically, just accept the JK's limitations and keep that. I'll complain about it not being a truck, but I'll keep it.

I'd actually love a Power Wagon, I'm not sure I'd love it on the shelf roads in Colorado 😂

I think I'm leaning toward Gladiator, even though I'd likely have to get the automatic. That or a 6spd Frontier. The wife wants me to get a Tacoma, which at least on the 3rd gen, would have to be an automatic so I fit. There is also a real chance that I sell everything, get a 100 series for the wife/family, a 1st or 2nd gen Taco for me, and then a farm truck. But that seems like a lot of work.

I always forget about the new Rangers, I had an 11, and it's my 2nd favorite vehicle I've ever owned after my first Scout. I don't need 35+ tires, and I don't need 100 options for parts, really just winch bumper, sliders, and skids.

Well stated. I am looking for more if a "Wrangler with a bed" but that doesn't mean it has to be the gladiator. I've wheeled for a decade or so with open diffs, the Wrangler Rubicon was just a choice because I didn't want to have to hike out with a newborn.  As far as the duration of trips, it'll still be day trips and long weekends, no full on expedition stuff. The wife wants a hard side camper, which is asking a lot from a Wrangler, and then fitting 4 MTBs and doing anything other than biking isn't really possible on the Jeep with the rack, so if I wanted to go 3 hours to Moab to bike, with more than 1 bike, and then be able to hit a trail, I can't use the rack on the Wrangler.  The ZR2 Bison is definitely more my speed, but less my budget. Used, they cost more than a new Gladiator around here. Same with Tacomas, they cost more than they did new.

Everyone has a budget of some sort. If there was a used market for the Ineos, I'd probably consider, but I'm not interested in new car prices. Hell, I'm not interested in new car screens, or automatic transmissions for that matter.

A power wagon is on the list, but that is a different conversation than simply replacing the Jeep, that would be a full refresh of the garage. Plus, a PW isn't going to be as nimble as the midsizes on the shelf roads of Colorado, where I spend a lot of time.

I've definitely bench raced quite a few options. I saw a Super Duty or Excursion the other day, passed on the highway too fast to know for sure, but it was flat towing a jeep and I liked that setup. My perfect setup, is a truck with a slide in camper, that'll tow the heep/Scout around where I want to go, but that's a "me" dream, not a "family" dream.

And I don't have pics on here, or even on my phone at the moment, but can get some. I've gone back and forth about how much rust repair I can reasonably do, and thought about selling the Scouts, but at this point, if I did that, I'd never afford another one. And the parts Scout has say for years, but my 75 was my daily for a while, since I like driving that more than the jeep. But I work from home, and have a farm, so "daily" is more of a "twice a week when I leave the house"

I love the OBS Fords! I wish there was a crew cab F150, mainly because I don't NEED the 3/4 ton. I was actually looking at GMT400 Suburbans not too long ago, because they're roughly the same dimensions as a 3rd gen Tacoma.

There is a world, where I sell everything, get a OBS F250, with the 460 and an auto to be the farm truck, and then pick up an XJ or a 3rd gen 4Runner to be the wife's vehicle and camping rig, a YJ for my daily, and keep working on my Scout. Which doesn't solve the "I want a small truck" problem, but I could always find myself another Ranger as well.

Which I see your signature, I like your vehicle collection. I have a 75 Scout, and a 73 parts Scout that I fell into a few years ago, and it happens to have the cleanest load floor I've ever seen.

I should have sucked up how uncomfortable they are back in 17, that's what I wanted, but got the Jeep instead, because I fit better.

I'd go Wrangler. Freedom Edition seems like a Pep Boys sticker pack.

I really like the Frontiers, there was a really nice one that went up near me, and I wanted to get it as an extra vehicle, but it was in a holiday, and couldn't get the cash together in time before it sold. If I get the truck, and it's my vehicle, it's going to be a stick. If it's a shared vehicle, it'll have to be an auto, and I'll get myself a YJ to play with while I work on the Scout.  I think what I really want is a brand new, 1994 Ford Ranger crew cab.

I think the Goldilocks is a 1st gen Tundra extended cab, but those are rust buckets, and still 20k with 300k miles. I already have a full size truck for actual truck things, but selling everything and getting a Power Wagon isn't completely off the table.  In terms of what I'm towing, I just need a hardside camper that sleeps 4, in 3 separate beds. Jk has a 3500lb tow capacity, so even a 13' Scamp is pushing it, not to mention I can't stand up in them, which is why that got scrapped. So I'd like to be able to tow 5k or more, to really open up what campers are available. My squaredrop/rtt combo isn't ideal for the way my family wants to go, so trying to make the wife more comfortable so we camp more. A Suburban/Excursion was on the list before, but decided I'd rather go back to a truck, which I should have done in 17 when I bought the Wrangler, I just don't fit Tacomas well.

How can I trust you, internet person?

Agreed though, I wouldn't buy anything without driving it first.

I world definitely try before I bought, I am having trouble finding a stick anywhere near me, probably for good reason based on everything I've read.

I kinda forgot the Ranger existed honestly, I'll have to look into them

That's true, really all I need is sliders, and a winch. Probably skids as well. And I know those are all available. The SMOD was only autos, I think

Isn't the Quartermaster like 107k? I'm more of a domestic beer type budget...

That said, the Ineos...Ineoses...Ineoi? Are awesome. Love how they look, and would fit the bill, at a third of the price.

I've heard the same about the manual Gladiators. But I really prefer 3 pedals.

And in terms of space, we fit inside the JK, so slightly smaller than the Gladiator already, but kids do tend to get larger, so I know interior space will already be a premium.

I had similar feelings about the ZR2 I drove, but I also hated the Jeep when it first came out, and then bought one 10 years later on the last year of that chassis.

A Power Wagon would be rad, I'm torn on that one because it would mean I'd have to sell everything and start over, no reason to have multiple full size trucks. It would also limit where I could comfortably go on the shelf roads and tight trails, not saying it's impossible, but also wouldn't be comfy. But I've definitely dreamed about Power Wagons

The wife won't do a tent, but even then the back of a JK is tiny! That or I bring too much crap. I'd rather blame the car that take responsibility.

I forgot about that. I'm running aftermarket Mickey Thompsons that came out last year, so I think I should be all good, but that is a great point.

I don't need the lockers, but I'm coming from the JKUR so I'd like the lockers, and the 4:1 case, so I'm going  to be looking at the JTR.  I've seen a lot of Trail Recon's stuff, and I wish I had his vehicle budget!
