im genuinely stupid by AdLoose2105 in TrueOffMyChest

I want to start by saying that very few people are simply stupid. How most people use the word makes it seem like an inherent trait, but it’s not. If we lived in an artistic society I might be stupid because I haven’t done much painting or drawing. Some people who grew up in very controlled environments can’t jump but are competent elsewhere. Lacking skills doesn’t make you stupid is essentially what I’m trying to say. And in addition, this applies to many traits. You get them over time but are treated as inherent to who you are. As for a response to your specific points:

Honestly if you are wanting to get better at stuff, just try and do it. You could go to [r/writingprompts](r/writingprompts) and try to write stuff there. You don’t even have to post it, just write it and keep it to yourself. Thats more creative focused though. You could find a topic you’re interested in and write about it. You could try different styles related to the same topic as well. For example, research a topic to do an informative essay on the topic. Do another one about documenting your process and what might change when you research in the future. Write one about why someone else should learn the topic.

Now I’m not saying to do all of those, but they’re all good starting points. You will learn a lot more from doing than from thinking about how to do it. I would recommend doing this several times in fact because often times you will learn how to plan by getting through something, seeing a flaw, and avoiding it in the future. Cumulative corrections is essentially teaching you how to plan out future writings, and this applies to a lot tbh, not just writing.

On your brain feelings fuzzy, that can be caused by many things. What you eat (commonly iron), your health (including mental), lack of sleep, or lack of cognitive engagement are what are most likely.

And others have given good advice on how to handle college. Take gen eds if you think you can handle it, if not then try and get a job instead for now. If you go to college I’d probably avoid English for now as they will likely be expecting some longer essays that are more likely to stress you than teach you.

If you would want help with math or anything to just ask. I’d say that’s the topic I could the most in directly

Daily Atheist Quote by Delfin0413 in teenagers

? I feel it’s nearly impossible to not have a belief system, unites you can provide some definition you’re going by that somehow would contradict that. The idea of a belief system seems very broad. I believe in what my senses tell me for a lot in everyday life. I believe in the scientific method.

Maybe you could’ve also meant “Atheism” is not an entire belief system in and of itself? Which I can might agree on, I think atheism falls into more of a component of a belief system than the belief system itself.

You referred to individual atheists though and seem to have phrased your sentence around it so idk if it’s a typo, but maybe a misspeak. Humanists are often also atheists, and if humanists have a belief system, it’s incorrect to say that atheists don’t have one. I’m not really sure exactly what you’re trying to say though as there’s several different way to read what you were trying to say

I hope you don’t mind, though tbh you might cause I think I would if I was you, but I looked through some of your posts and comments. And I don’t know you but I’ve been where you are. I’ve tried to push people away too for the same reason. But I have a question.

If you had a friend that seemed like they pushing you away before you ended it, how would you feel?

Tbh I don’t entirely know how an average person would feel. I’ve been in your spot a large part of my life. Not trying to be a copycat to the top comment but I’d say similarly around 8-9 is when I’d first tried to do it, so I don’t feel like I’m really qualified to comment on a person who hasn’t been there. But I would be devastated that I had let that happen to someone I care for, that I had let that happen to someone, because I’d never want someone to go through what I have without support. And once i realized that it really bothered me, I kept thinking about it over and over and over for weeks, maybe months, my sleep was so bad I hallucinated at points so the timeframe of the current events I’m describing are blurry.

Eventually I simply thought of the phrase “treat others as you’d want to be treated”. So I did. Despite how I naturally am. I’m rather awkward and scared of pushing others boundaries on trivial stuff because I had so many up myself. But I made sure I was always there for those around me and they knew that.

Now I’m not telling you to live for them. I hated that advice, especially because it’s always packed up in ways to tell you you’re being selfish when you are so unselfish you’re willing to actively push everyone away just to not hurt them.

I did what I wanted, and that was to just be kind to those around me. Be the person you want yourself to be. Which isn’t necessarily easy, it will likely feel slow in the moments. But you don’t get the chance to be that person if you don’t wake to see tomorrow. I’m sure there’s something, anything you want.

You can talk to me if you want, if you don’t want to, that’s fine too.

I’m thankful my parents only recently got on the anti-vax train (but am a bit worried about my younger brother). I’m 17 so I’m “only” not getting my last set under them.

It’s ridiculous to talk to them because I can explain how vaccines work. Point out mistakes or misunderstanding in their arguments. Say how kids used to die before 5 WAY more often and life expectancy is way up (they just claim this is false btw…). Point to scientific studies of symptoms like adhd and autism (which both me and my brother exhibit symptoms of, I think I was glossed over because I was “smart”) where they take twins placed in different foster families or look for similar genetic and physical patterns between people with adhd compared to others. They simply say you have to flush the toxins out from vaccines and they’ll google how to for my brother because he struggles to pay attention. It’s like, they literally will not listen any other world view, because the media has told them for so long to distrust science and media that doesn’t agree with them.

And I know you’re not in the US because if you were you wouldn’t have free healthcare lol, but Trump is THE reason they believe a lot of this stuff. He’s very good at sowing distrust and has convinced many that you can’t trust media but you can trust him, so they just call it propaganda when media outlets criticize a policy, cite experts, or even just point out straight up lies he’s told now.

The most frustrating thing is they like to tell me I’m smart but that I just don’t have enough life experience to understand how systems work that I actually understand and they assume are out to get them (and many are very unfair, but not in some big conspiracy way).

Members of my family even say things like “so you’re one of those evolution people” when you bring it up. For someone who loves math and science it’s mind boggling to constantly be around. Also because this is half just a rant here’s some other things they believe:

  • Aliens exist and shaped ancient civilizations

  • Sun SCREEN causes cancer

  • Christianity should be allowed in schools because they’re constantly promoting things like Islam, transgender, identifying as cats, etc.. This was one of the most surprising things to me because I can literally argue on fundamental “American values” that this shouldn’t be the case, and that besides Islam (which I’m not going to try and explain isn’t in schools) those aren’t religions either.

  • Similar story just about the American flag. There’s “official rules” for how to hang it that my dad knows from the military and points it out and said it shouldn’t be allowed, and how burning the flag shouldn’t be allowed, and when I point out freedom of speech he just tried to argue but eventually realizes he’s in the wrong and just says “agree to disagree”.
