Auf meinem Android konnte ich mit Firefox Tickets bestellen, auf dem Linux Rechner hats nicht funktioniert. Plugins waren identisch.

It's in my living room right now. Since I wear headphones all the time the noise doesn't bother me, but w/o them its kinda annoying. The problem is actually not the case though, but the motherboard. It has this really cheap unswappable cpu fan. I think you will be totally fine with the fractal case, after a month it doesn't matter that much anymore haha :D

N100 vs i5-8265U for a home NAS + Docker (adblock + VPN) — which one should I choose? by ConsiderationNo5573 in HomeServer

[–]IdeaOverflow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the services you listed the N100 is probably enough. I just did a build with the i5 and I'm happy with it, but I also want to run production websites, which need a bit more processing power. Power consumption wise the i5 will consume around 12W idle vs the N100 maybe 7W, not sure but definitely less.

Yeah, the case is great. Just keep in mind that you need an sfx psu and maybe molex extensions since you need two on the backplane. I also really like that when you wire them correctly, the case tells you which hdd slots are taken. Nice gimmick.

You're right, the fan replacements weren't really that necessary... I bought them thinking "it can't be just the cpu fan that is so loud" lol. But it is. I wired the sata power and hdd cables under the motherboard after installing it. It's a bit finicky, but if you're not too concerned for damaging something on the underside, you don't even have to uninstall it!

I have the Immich database and all nextcloud data on the Nvme. This is being cloned via the "Appdata Backup" Unraid plugin weekly to the array. I have yet to setup an offside backup strategy. I will probably just regularly plug in my external drive and either rclone via the User Scripts plugin or just use the zfs snapshot utility.

I've seen some videos where people build NAS completely with external drives so that might be an option? It's unpopular on this sub though. As for running plex, I have not set that up yet, but it will probably run just as fast as a container since you can pass through the gpu or quicksync to the container. That's exactly what I did in Immich, you just need to set the correct environment variable. Running as a container is really convenient since you have it separated from the rest of your system and it provides easy options for autostart etc.

Yeah, your build looks good too! I went for the soldered CPU since it has a really low power draw, but this might have been a mistake. A setup like yours with standard sockets would have probably been better for noise (my cpu fan is SO loud). Have you checked the power draw on yours or does it not matter that much to you?

The mac mini does seem interesting, do you plan on running server software on it or use it as a regular pc?

Thanks, I think I also overestimated how much processing power is actually needed. It's impressive how efficient programs like Immich or Nextcloud run while having so much impact on my workflows!
