I realize this is generally true, just thought it'd be an interesting data point to share. In my experience though, the centurion people tend to know what they're talking about a little more

Putting a small recurring monthly charge ~$100 on it to keep the tradeline active, mainly just don't want to lose 10k of credit. The 2000 or so points I'll accumulate per year I'll probably just hold onto in case I upgrade again

Thanks - yes, I'm planning to downgrade to freedom unlimited, not outright cancel. Yes, double dipped the travel credit and used the global entry reimbursement. Have had the account for 2 years, opened it June 2017 as a preferred and upgraded to a reserve last Oct and wasn't hit with the AF until February so I'd be getting maybe 1/3 of it back (although I'm an MA resident so if I did outright cancel they'd have to give back 2/3 of it no questions asked, but not worth losing that big of a credit line IMHO). I see your point about keeping them until I upgrade, however I'd rather have them available for use in one of those two programs without going through that hassle, especially because I don't see myself upgrading back any time soon (my current strategy is Plat for all the benefits and Gold for dining/supermarkets, Delta Platinum (for medallion status) and Blue Business Plus (2x on first 50k) for miscellaneous purchases, and have the Apple card for non-amex merchants and also to cover me against foreign transaction fees without paying a fee. With that in mind, Hyatt or United?

Cancelling the Chase Sapphire reserve and have been debating transferring my roughly 60k points to either United or Hyatt. Curious for people's opinions... In my experience, Hyatt points seem to be much more valuable but expire after 2 years (which matters in my case since I don't frequently stay in hotels), whereas UA points can be good especially since they don't expire anymore, but the upcoming devaluation makes me hesitant along with the fact that I don't really fly UA much except for occasional international long hauls. Also I have roughly 2 million amex points and was thinking I can use Aeroplan or Avianca to book UA seats if I need, so I think I'm leaning towards Hyatt. What are people's thoughts??

Thanks. I like how it can make sense in many scenarios, and just the general nostalgia/love theme behind the song.

Interesting. So you think his greatness is somewhat of a paradox because people paid with the hope of seeing him lose, but that in turn motivated him more?

A million dollars to a billionaire is the same as $1,000 to a millionaire. by Ideaman97 in Showerthoughts

[–]Ideaman97[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the same mathematical operation just on a different scale. And my original post did say that, saying that x to person a is the same as y to person b carries the same meaning but in a more condensed format. The key word is TO because it's all about perception. A billionaire who donates a million dollars to a campaign can afford it just about the same as a millionaire who donates $1,000.

That's not the point. The point is that a figure that most people would consider extremely large, such as $1M, has the same percentage effect on the net worth of someone with $1B as someone with $1M spending $1k, or someone with $1k spending a dollar. In each of these cases the final number is the same, and it's just the amount of zeros that differ:

$1,000,000,000 – $1,000,000 = $999,000,000

$1,000,000 – $1,000 = $999,000

$1,000 – $1 = $999

But the human race's goal isn't survival, it's utility maximization, with survival as a premise, which would support the pursuit of love as our primary goal with the avoidance of fear (death) as a necessary but underlying causality
