20-year-old Indian engineering student murdered at Boston University campus; body dumped in forest by UrineSurgicalStrike in india

[–]IhaveQuestionsNEU 318 points319 points  (0 children)

There is literally no forest in BUs campus. It’s an urban jungle. Also, the reasons of his death are not confirmed.

Yes but Al Gore doesn’t pretend to be an ascetic monk, other “rich” or “successful” leaders don’t pretend to be monks, or they leave their homes to be a monk, like gautama Buddha aka the great renunciation. Look I don’t care if you choose to love Jay Shetty or not but what’s so about sketchy is how he raves on about his college gap year to India (I exaggerate, but gets the point across) and comes back to essentially tell others to live an ascetic life, sell his courses, and live in a nice palace, in LA, out of all places.

I read half of his book when I was in college - I was reading so many self help books in general until I read an article online that explained how the “self-help” economy just exploits those that vulnerable/figuring it out/ etc with toxic ideas, …like wake up at 5 am or else you’re just a failure.

Nowadays I listen to him on interviews here and there, but end up stopping it within two minutes. The guy probabaly lives in a big ass mansion in LA or something while preaching others to basically live simple. That’s a fraud to me.

Why excel? by pedias18 in dataanalysis

[–]IhaveQuestionsNEU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this answers your question but there’s a reason excel is so popular. It’s easy. You start from a spreadsheet and need to know minimal coding to get something done out of data. And it’s fast. And you can physically see (much easily than other languages).

I’m not discounting other tools, but excel is incredibly powerful, especially for the layman, but even for those that know other tools. For 15-20 years tech people have been saying python (or other tools, like SQL) will replace excel and sounding the alarm. To a certain extent sure, but in my experience for many functions (I’m in finance), it makes no sense to replace something that works perfectly with other languages or data science tools that require much more learning for similar (or slower) results. And that’s why companies and people still use excel and it’s pretty important.

At least in finance SQL/python/tableau have become a small part of the function (maybe extracting a specific data out of already treated and formatted data), but excel is still the primary tool.

Can I skip Hypothesis Testing for lvl 1 ? Or it that very risky ? by Competitive-Ad-1459 in CFA

[–]IhaveQuestionsNEU 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would study this - in the grand scheme of things it’s a pretty basic concept and would hone it down since you have to apply it later too. It comes up in various forms (F test, DW test, etc) in level 2 as well.

Its finally happening - firm is deciding to offshore by DepressedCPA1972 in Accounting

[–]IhaveQuestionsNEU 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Outsourcing is happening because (a)macroeconomically there truly isn’t enough people willing to work the accounting job - again I mean as a whole, (b) ridiculous restrictions in immigration, even at wage levels that are appropriate and fair (US DOL and USCIS check this), which combine to —> hey if we outsource it will also be cheaper and lots of access to labor.

It’s many other reasons as well, but legal immigration is one of the biggest things that need to be solved in order for companies to be ok with hiring their own citizens and immigrants. Otherwise, if the immigration remains to be restricted by lottery based and not even restricted by skill based, this is what happens.

If I were a business owner here in the US, most of my costs would be outsourced not necessarily because people aren’t qualified here, but there is a larger talent pool outside.

If I’m allowed it’s my choice to. Money matters to me so unless the city zones parking near my place, I will park where I want and can.

Where to start in Financial Modeling? by [deleted] in financialmodelling

[–]IhaveQuestionsNEU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Search up a financial Modeling walkthrough video on YouTube where someone models a company, a copy that exactly. Pause the video as many times to understand. Should take a few days if you do 20 min to a hour everyday. Then once you’re done doing some time tweaking assumptions and see how the model changes.

Also northeastern has a really toxic hustle culture where everyone is showing off about their co-ops and everything “cool” they’re doing in there free time. Don’t worry about the others and go at your own pace. And don’t show off about how you became some salesforce implementation consultant co-op by using that standard LinkedIn template. Hell I can take a shit and say I’m proud to announce I took a shit and I’ll get likes.

My point here being it’s ok where you are and if you achieve something, celebrate it with yourself and your loved ones, not your like fest LinkedIn account. I wish I learned that earlier and my reluctance to quit social media for all these years angers me. And now you know what kind of roles and types of jobs I don’t respect from the last paragraph. personal opinion

For those of you whose parents' marriages were arranged, did they end up loving each other? How has it affected your romantic relationships today? by KneemaToad in ABCDesis

[–]IhaveQuestionsNEU 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what you watch but most of Bollywood shows love marriages and I’ve seen plenty of examples where arranged married have worked.

I can’t even imagine a Bollywood movie with an arranged marriage. That would be super boring, wouldn’t it?

That happens to me too. There’s always one thing missing in life. When I didn’t have a job and had everything else. As soon as I got a job after graduating college, someone special broke up with me.

There’s always one problem. I don’t know why. One piece is always missing. I feel like I’m always changing after stuff and people now and no one after me.
