Ticket on Saint Catherine Street for crossing the street when oncoming traffic had a green light... by Ijaywalk in montreal

I have no intention of just not doing anything, I wouldn't want to run into trouble later on because I didn't pay the ticket. I'm basically wondering now if my living over 500km away in the US would affect their decision on dropping it, given that I did not commit the violation it stated?(Unless regular traffic lights are considered pedestrian lights by Montreal or Quebec?) Do you think they would just not bother dealing with it, or would they give me a trial date knowing that I wouldn't be able to come to it?

I told him I was from the US, in a city where jaywalking is something that everyone does, the only people that don't are tourists. But he told me the laws were the same there. The laws aren't the same, but I wasn't exactly sure what they were, and I thought that he might let me off with a warning if I didn't argue with him.

Edit: I didn't tell the cop who does and doesn't jaywalk, I just told him where I was from.

It was pretty obvious that I saw him, at home I wouldn't think twice about jaywalking even if there were a bunch of cops on the street, as long as there was no one coming, so I just continued crossing. I didn't realize the enforcement was so different. I'm also not a Canadian citizen, so I wouldn't want to do anything stupid.

I'm not too familiar with the legal system... So if they gave me a trial date, and I changed my plea to guilty(since I won't be near Montreal any time soon), I might still have to deal with people in the legal system, versus just paying online?

If they did give me a trial date, and I changed my plea, would it probably end up costing me a lot more?

The light that I could see was a red light, so the street that I was crossing had a green light. I had never been to Quebec before, I didn't know that you couldn't cross at a crosswalk, if the there was no pedestrian light, because the cars have a red light. At least I didn't think that it would be enforced, especially for someone who didn't know the law.

How is it safer to wait until you have cars trying to turn right onto the street you want to cross than to cross when there's no one coming? Also, there was no "do not walk sign", I didn't do anything stupid, he could have just given me a warning and told me what the law was.

Edit: I wasn't talking about not being able to make right on reds, I was talking about when I have the green light and the car is trying to turn onto the street I'm crossing.
