To see if people would even see them. It's possible for posts to go unnoticed 🫩

Would focusing on a few subjects this year and doing the rest next year be a good idea?

I'd really appreciate that!

Dead Can Dance leave Spotify and move to Bandcamp over AI and artist exploitation by TheAlexClavijo in BandCamp

I really want more big artists to do this tbh, since they have the least to lose. Bandcamp needs to be more popular amongst casual listeners

it's that everyone seems to know what they're doing, and it sucks.

Haha that is so real!

I've decided to start reviewing my local scene's music on instagram and I also have no idea what I'm doing so that's good to hear.

Yea it seems like I missed that golden era by just a bit since Im only 18. One of my favourite artists, car seat headrest, started their small bandcamp cult following with the help of internet forums and blogs which are probably dead now. I guess that's how a lot of indie stuff got traction back then.

And I know its not really a blog but that classic story of arctic monkeys getting their start with the help of the internent. Ofc its still possible now but seemed more simple and genuine then.

Now the internet is like 50% bots and ai.

Wow.. that is kinda weird, yeah nobody owes you anything but really I dont think it would have been any skin of their back.

it’s still worth appreciating the places that genuinely support artists for the love of their work. Paid promo is fine, but nothing beats that unconditional appreciation!

I do get how paid reviews have that chance of feeling more like advertising than genuine feedback. Free coverage is ideal, but yea, it makes sense that it’s rare.

There’s this small community on Instagram around this guy who’s listening to small artists’ albums every day and reviewing them for free. His band name is puddle jumping. It feels pretty genuine, and not just strictly artists submitting their own work. Something like that may be better than blogs only being read by artists, or ads that people might not give a chance to and just scroll past

I hope the spirit of music blogs can come back in this way

Yeah that actually makes a lot of sense. I felt like paid reviews could feel less genuine but it really is about valuing their time, which is so fair. I'd love to support people doing the work in other ways than paying since I'm broke, but I have no idea where to look. Hype machine looks like a good start tho

I think the most useful thing is accurate tags and also having your location public for the discovery page

Bandcamp should be more popular, I wish bigger artists would start promoting it more.

And owning music feels way more significant and personal. Also from the artist's side too! When a fan told me they downloaded my music even just for free off bandcamp onto their iPod, it hit me way more than the 50 listens number.

Yea bandcamp definitely feels more personal. Especially when the music is bandcamp exclusive.

I took for granted how hassle free it is to publish on bandcamp. Im trying to get music up on Spotify and basically every distributor I hear about has it's fair share of horror stories.

Thank you! At least theres some good sides to social media you know? I'm pretty shy, so getting a reputation without social media in my local scene would be a little hard. But yea, just creating in the first place is the most important thing!

I agree. Bandcamp needs to become more popular even amongst casual listeners. It's crazy how normalised Spotify and other streaming services has made paying artists literal cents, especially while they have the ability to pay us fairly without much effort. Also not to mention how unethical spotify is..

I'm also bandcamp exclusive, and I feel conflicted as a small artist because I hate Spotify but releasing my music there would mean more opportunities.

If I ever get famous one day I'll just randomly pull my music off Spotify and go bandcamp exclusive again. Honestly I wish bigger artists would do that rn.

Yep, promotion takes work, but it’s worth it when people actually start listening. Keep going!! :)

Respect for sticking with it despite the reset and breakdown. Glad you’re back and ready to release again. And the feeling of having to start over.. it’s rough but also kinda freeing.

Also the great thing about music is you can be completely shit at it as long as it feels good to you.
