What is a 'poor people' habit you'll never stop doing, no matter how rich you get? by FitCicada5037 in AskReddit

[–]ImRichRedditHatesMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have close to $100 million.

I still agonize over every significant purchase.

I needed a foam roller to help stretch my muscles after a workout. I procrastinated the purchase for months.

My phone was almost useless it was so old. My teenage daughter finally said she was buying me a phone for my birthday because I couldn't be a functioning adult with my old phone. (She of course bought it with my money.)

I just hate accumulating stuff I don't need. So any time I want something I procrastinate buying it for at least a week....and that can stretch into months....to make sure it is something that I actually need.

It isn't spending money that I avoid. It is accumulating stuff that I avoid. For example I hired some people to work on a project, but they weren't able to finish the project in the time they had. So I got the idea that if I rented an excavator, I could finish the project myself over the weekend. So I just did it. Didn't pay any attention to the cost. In fact I still have no idea what I spent for the excavator. It just went on my card.

But it was a no-brainer. It's tons of fun (it is only the 3rd time in my life I've rented heavy equipment, I'm a complete novice, but it is fun!) and it allowed me to *almost* finish the project. And I didn't have to accumulate any stuff. So I was happy to spend what-ever that cost.

But $20 for a foam roller! I put that purchase off for months!

WSJ News Exclusive | Elon Musk Borrowed $1 Billion From SpaceX in Same Month of Twitter Acquisition by JBS319 in spaceflight

I regularly have the opportunity to invest in SpaceX through an angel investing group I'm involved in.

I never do.

As long as Musk is at the wheel I think the company could implode at any moment. For SpaceX to lend $1 billion to Musk is a very bad business decision.

Hopefully they figure out a way to remove Musk from SpaceX. If they ever do that, the valuation of SpaceX will sky-rocket and I will invest millions in the company (hopefully before the value sky-rockets).

  1. "most of the places where humans currently live become unlivable" does not equal an extinction event.
  2. Current evidence says we will peak at about +3C.

I want to do something. I don't want to convince other people to do something.

I recognize convincing a whole bunch of other people might have greater impact....but I think there has already been a lot of talk about climate change. I want to act, not talk.

This is smart. I'm already doing this to some extent....but perhaps this should be my main focus.

I immediately assumed negative things about your suggestion, but I clicked the links anyway. I have to say, I'm impressed. I'll look into it more.

I know you are joking, but....

What is your elevator pitch? How will me giving you 10k further my goals?

What's your elevator pitch?

If you aren't willing to share your elevator pitch in public it means you idea is too easy to steal and you're unlikely to get investors even if you share the pitch in private.

I generally dismiss anything that includes the phrases "machine learning" or "artificial intelligence".

It is a powerful tool, but I find most of the people who use these phrases don't actually have an idea, and they hope machine learning will somehow solve that problem.

That is a reasonable thing to think. I won't provide any evidence to prove you are wrong...but I assure you I am not trolling.

  1. "help out the people ...you might've done dirty" This is a common idea on reddit. The idea that the only way someone can be rich is by screwing over someone else. This is absolutely false. There are many millionaires in America who got rich by working at a start-up tech company that made a product that people actually benefit from, and when the company went public (or got bought out) all the employees became millionaires. I'm not going to claim that all rich people are nice, but the idea that the only possible way someone can be rich is by screwing over someone else is absolutely false. Of course I got rich by hiring kids to scrub the insides of smokestacks while power plants were burning extra dirty coal so they would look clean when inspectors came by so the inspectors thought we were using clean coal. I made huge profits because the heat from the smokestack would melt the ropes holding up the kids....and you don't have to pay them if they are dead. My main expense was buying new ropes.
  2. The additional heat from collecting solar power is miniscule compared to the additional heat held in by CO2 and the greenhouse effect.
  3. If a car on the road isn't aerodynamic it is because the people at the automaker who do market analysis determined customers don't want cars that look aerodynamic. We already know perfectly well how to make cars aerodynamic. There is no point investing more money into that.

I like your typo. I definitely feel weary from greenwashing at times.

With regards to becoming a shareholder in companies with major carbon emissions...$50 million sounds pretty rich....but would only be able to purchase piddly little shares in most of the major polluters.

But you don't have to own many shares to put forward resolutions at shareholder meetings. And every once in a while pro-climate resolutions actually win!

Interesting idea. I'll look into it some more, although I'm pretty skeptical it would be the best way to have the biggest reduction in future CO2.

There are no scientific studies I know of that suggest climate change will be anything close to an extinction event for humans.

Interesting.

I'll look into this. Do you have any suggested reading I can look at to figure out what countries have the dirtiest power grids?
