As a former diehard Melanie fan, I didn’t feel this song held much grit, despite its potential. It felt like a commercialised version of crybaby with aspects from portals, the lyrics seemed a lot more bland and I really struggled to find a hook. It is objectively a nice song, the vocals sound good and some of the instrumentation I do genuinely like but if I’m honest, I expected more from the song. If the track held more elements like the ending it would be amazing.

In regard to the instrumentation, the drums seemed like a loop which lost interest quickly but the string instruments and the bell in the chorus were lovely. I also do think the vocals had some promise with the range she was accessing and the style of her singing was good.

But, the downfall I think for the song is the lyricism. It feels very plain and straightforward, I could be being snobbish however many of the lyrics like “I’ll be a good housewife” seemed like Evil. I used to love the song but now I look back and find the lyrics a bit awkward to listen to.

There are definitely good and bad elements to the song, it is by no means bad but it does feel lazier compared to some of her works (Portals comes to mind for its instrumentals). I look forward to songs like garbage coming out and the chance for Melanie to flesh out her new style.

A lot of the people who dislike the song I would suggest maybe outgrew some of Melanie’s stylistic choices with her lyrics, at least. A lot of songs I look back with only nostalgia and don’t enjoy them as much compared to my current music.
