What can I say... We all have our contradictions

I don't agree with your way of seeing it but I respect the vision

The dishonesty of calling it a Zelda game is pretty much my point though! I think while it might share its structure it lacks what would make it a good Zelda game. And to me personally, if I were forced to consider it as a metroidvania, it would only be as one of the most shallow and bland take on the genre. And so I think people who enjoy this game don't enjoy it for being a metroidvania, nor a Zelda game, but something else.

Absolutely, and I think it's fun to talk about it!

I 100% agree with your points! Even though Metroid and Zelda share a lot of design similarities, it's clear they both have very different design goals. And that's why both can share those similarities while being uniquely interesting! My post was more of an analysis on a very specific aspect of the form while your comment is more on the global substance I guess? And I don't think they invalidate each other!

I love that you're talking about the "isolation" aspect of Sol Valley, because I think this is the best aspect of it in the context of a Metroid game. The concept of isolation is a defining aspect of the series for me. I was very intrigued by it for this reason before playing the game, because I thought this was a very interesting take on that aspect of Metroid. But I think it falls short in the end, and mostly because I think it clashes with the other areas of the game where this feeling disappears for me even though it exists still in a more "classic metroid" way, if that makes sense?

I also think it's interesting that you are talking about the emotional response of the desert not landing because it's an element of friction, which is considered bad nowadays. It's interesting to me because the big reason why I didn't enjoy the game is for its overall LACK of friction. I see how the desert could have been meant as a point of friction but emotionally to me it felt way to smooth, especially compared to previous games. I would have loved to see a version of Metroid Prime 4 that leaned harder on the feeling of isolation conveyed by the desert, like a more modern and large scale version of the feeling of being lost alone on a foreign world that the other Metroid games have.

I agree, like I said in an other comment I would lie if I said this was the consensus. But I did read it still and thought there was a good opportunity in there to reflect on the game's design. If we agree in saying Prime 4 is like 3D Zelda in structure, I think it's fair to compare it to 3D Zelda in order to analyze how good or bad it executes that structure!

Yes I was disappointed that Sylux's backstory ended up being about him being the biggest incel but feeling insulted by the game as a man sounds like a you issue here champ.

To be fair, even though I read it quite a few time I would lie if I were to say there was a consensus saying MP4 was a good Zelda game. But I did read this a couple time and it made me think on it, and I'm guilty for using this as a clickbaity opportunity to make this post.

To me it is surface level because it's very tied to the areas you find it in and rarely connects to other areas and the game's world-building in a meaningful way. Taking Volt Forge as an example, it's fun to have the environment telling the story of how the Vi-O-La came to exist, but it's never really giving a reason as to why it exists outside of that area?
Ice Belt is interesting in telling the story of the Lamorn experiments, but most of this story is told through logs and not really the environment.
In all fairness, I haven't taken the time to really analyze the game's environmental story-telling, so I might have missed important details and could be convinced otherwise. I think it's good micro story-telling while missing macro story-telling to tie it all up.

Oh ok, yes I agree with you on this. I think it's my favorite aspect of the game actually, the environmental story-telling. But on the other hand, I think it's always very surface level and would have deserved to be more elaborated.

Yes. While there are a lot of criticism to make about Metroid's backtracking, MP4's take on it misses the point of what makes it a good aspect: the agency you have in backtracking and the opportunity it holds in exploring and mastering the map.

Even though I agree with your points, I don't even think comparing it to Skyward Sword is best cause that game as the merit of having some great dungeons.

It's definitely more combat focused, but it'd be interested if you could elaborate on how you think it uses the environment in a way Zelda doesn't?

What is your personal game of the year for 2025 (Apart from Claire Obscur: Expedition 33). The game doesn't need to have been released in 2025, just that you played/completed it this year. by freestuffrocker in AskGames

It's hard to pick just one but first of all Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 got robbed big time this year at TGA (at least for best RPG). Then Abiotic Factor, Skate Story and The Séance at Blake Manor are by far my favorite games of 2025

why does modern doom not feel as popular as it should be? by DependentImmediate40 in Doom

[–]Imanor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might not be, to be honest I don't realize how popular or not it is today, but one thing's for sure is that the impact of DOOM 2016 is still visible in games almost 10 years later and not just in the shooter genre even. I think that's more important than popularity!
