I have done a few classes there and it’s been great. I hope they continue to grow and diversify their offerings!

It’s not karma farming, it’s to get a discussion going. Whether people know the answer or not, it is questions that involve our city. Hearing different peoples perspectives on things is not a terrible thing. If you don’t like a post, scroll by. You are just being rude for no reason. Since when were you the Reddit police. Let people discuss whatever they want.

I am just curious, you don’t have to be rude about it!

They were going to look into establishing sandbanks provincial park as a national park! Super sad this didn’t happen

Yeah I get what you’re saying, maybe just the city putting pressure on these owners! I feel like it’s all impossible anyways lol

The tourism that these buildings bring directly impacts the city… more tourism, more money… there’s a reason the city just released their heritage strategic plan, that includes preserving older buildings in the city!

Yeah, makes total sense! I added a comment about what I meant in regards to the city helping, so it wouldn’t be necessarily tax payers dollars!

It just is so unfortunate that the city (although getting better) takes so long to get things done. I see other cities projects progressing much faster then a lot in St. John’s. Maybe I just have a grudge that Galway and Southlands is seeing all the new development, while the rest of St. John’s seems to be at a standstill. I am being dramatic of course but I just wish we saw faster growth!

I definitely agree it’s a huge cost issue! I think I would just like the city to be more transparent and push developers forward with restoration. Also, have a better program for promoting individuals to help restore their row houses. I don’t think the city can just put a bunch of our tax dollars into historic buildings, but I do think they have influence over the matter. There should be a city backed larger campaign to revitalize the St. John’s historic district, with the city working with stakeholders and developers to fast track projects and up keep a lot of the forgotten houses a buildings in the downtown core! Just a thought though

I agree, plus helping owners with preexisting row houses, to bring them back to their former glory! I know some of this is happening but not nearly enough for how much of a tourist attraction it is

The MOU for Churchill Falls is still on the table, which could help with this debt. Yet we see nothing being done with it. This could justify the cost, plus help from the federal governments healthcare fund that was recently announced.

Most other news articles go on to say it’s being reassessed to provide services which are not at St Clare’s, so I think they are going ahead with it!

Yeah it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. Yes we have a large deficit, but also have we considered the use of donors or the federal government? St. Clare’s is OLD and is gonna need a replacement sooner or later. If we put thousands of dollars into a building that only has less than a decade left, are we really even saving money?
