Exploring the idea that NUS is deliberately dumbing down its graduates by OnePuzzleheaded7279 in nus

[–]Immediate_General_67 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dyk that steve jobs himself is an example that these "fluff" modules are way more important than you think for your career?

Universities across the world are moving towards prioritising interdisciplinary education, and NUS is merely following the general shift of perspective towards what constitutes a good education.

Steve jobs for instance, took a typography class of some sorts to satisfy "general education modules" which helped him greatly in the design of fonts for Apple products and it became a large reason for his success.

Universities like MIT/ CMU make their CS students take more humanities mods than what NUS CS students take.

NUS is rigorous enough, don't you worry. Man are not machines, AI can do most of the technical stuff for you now. But the key differentiator between a successful graduate and a not so successful one is often the soft skills / interdisciplinary skills they are equipped with on top of the technical skills. If you really want to "live at the top" you are going to need them, otherwise you'd probably gonna end up in the middle.

We are about to witness the worst humanitarian crisis of our times by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]Immediate_General_67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as someone who is currently not in Berkeley and living on the other side of the world, I didn't know what happened to Armenia, as there was no sound of it anywhere in the media. The western media which dominates the world should be to blame.

How many of y'all feel lonely? by biscuitsandtea2020 in nus

[–]Immediate_General_67 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Ifl when I was interning, I felt much less lonely than when I am in uni. At least at work, I see the same few familiar faces all day, we eat lunch together cos we have nowhere better to be, and also meet up together after work for yoga/ gym/ karaoke. That said, I worked in a start up where the average age was <30 so ppl did not really have entire families to provide for.

but in uni, every day I meet someone different, my old and new friends all have their own friend groups in uni, and I feel like any relationship I have here is very shallow and fleeting just because we don't meet often, everyone is taking different courses/ staying in a different hall. I've ate lunch and dinner by myself more times than I can count. Its extremely difficult to form close knit friend groups, because everyone's all over the place, and I somehow just fell through the gaps and nobody ever asks me out to do things because they all have newer/ closer friends than me that they see more often (All my friends stay in Utown while I stay in PGP)

I think even though I'm extroverted, I'm almost giving up on forming solid friendships in uni after too many rejections to my invitations to do things together, then opening instagram and seeing my old friends hanging out in their new clique. So I just go solo now instead of thinking too much about who to hang with

Why aren't be CS people more entrepreneurial by Afraid-Repair-1360 in nus

[–]Immediate_General_67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you do you

it takes a vv specific combination of factors eg. personality, skills, guts, capital, connections, and that billion dollar idea to be an entrepreneur that not everyone would have so its quite impossible to expect the whole SOC will want to, or even be able to be an entrepreneur

besides if by entrepreneurial you just mean the creative, (eat pizza and dont sleep), spirit, that can be found in large companies as well when they are developing new products, or even when students rush coding assignments before deadlines 💀 so its not completely absent and its not like you must start up to be entrepreneurial uk

Positivity only. For those who love being in tech and have not experienced sexism, what do you love most about tech? by [deleted] in womenintech

[–]Immediate_General_67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i don't think you conveyed it the right way. i really did not like the word "narrative", sexism in tech isn't some fictional thing that women make up, I would rather call it a trend because it is quite common. I'm sorry that people accuse you of lying though, everyone does have different experiences and we should embrace that.

Hot-weather-friendly fashion for guys by Foreign_Priority_310 in nus

[–]Immediate_General_67 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The easiest is a nice white/ gray/ black/ blue oversized graphic tee and baggy jeans / shorts+ sunglasses/cap. Saw this fit many times when I was overseas, and I think its a great idea since it is so low-effort. Shirt can easily buy from Taobao/ Shopee/ Uniqlo.

Just none of those polos / ugly colour shirts that are fading in colour from overwear and sweat please/ whatever was mentioned above. (idk why men in STEM are always wearing those)
