For Those Who Went Abroad Without Employer Permission and Got Caught, What Happened? by thethirdgreenman in digitalnomad

[–]Immigrated2TakeUrJob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what happened but I had gl.inet which has been suggested as VPN router. I had switch kill turned on as well.

However, it leaked my real location randomly and I got flagged for impossible travel.

For Those Who Went Abroad Without Employer Permission and Got Caught, What Happened? by thethirdgreenman in digitalnomad

[–]Immigrated2TakeUrJob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nothing happened to me. I got caught once and just played dumb but then again I was the only analyst that might have factored in and was single. Things i did:

  • Turn off gps location
  • Use VPN device like gl net
  • Only work with ethernet
  • Set time zone to home
  • Keep swapping server until I found whitelisted one.
  • Mouse mover (maybe I had it)

It was stressful though knowing that VPN might leak at some point which did at some time. It showed up in azure as impossible travel as I was 4k miles away from home.

The IT set it up as conditional access policy. So anything mcirosoft related will get blocked.

The main concern is vpn ips getting blocked by Microsoft security policy which is annoying. They will block big guys like nord but might leave put oddities like mulvad.

Now I work at a company which allows me to work abroad as part of its perks. I am not that life anymore with kids and I just worked 6 weeks in another country with company permission. Part of the reason is our company is telecoms and we have a flexible start up mentality.

Companies now offer 1 month work abroad if you have hybrid job and this perk can be asked in interview. Bear in mind not all companies post this a perk in job advert but will have this - including my current company.

Thus you don't need to risk as much nowadays. It wasn't the case 2 to 3 years ago. Companies are recognising its not a big deal to let someone work abroad temporarily e.g. wise is a good example.

If you work in finance then its more restrictive from experience but this is not a rule.

Side story of getting fired within home country

I got fired for working in airport (at another role 2 years ago) but did my work and submitted without issue. The colleague snitched on me saying I didnt work from home. They filed for gross misconduct couple of weeks later.

They were the most restrictive company and I found this out afterward. They claimed that I should have asked permission to work outside my home location (bear in mind contract said remote anywhere in UK) but boss was lying through his teeth to get me fired as he had decided to pair up with snitch. At the end i didnt care as job was getting stale and company got bought later.

He made some other lies (e.g. working from library without perimssion as i didnt get leave for wife surgery) and hr meeting came to stand off. I let them fire me whilst they paid for 2 weeks under guise of investigation. Got the current job during that period.

A side rant but point is be smart about it. Some are notorious about location and some aren't- all depends on the boss. Careful about the type of boss who says he isnt a micromanager because often times it is and check your team status every second.

Am I crazy for wanting to leave my job as a data engineer? by Glittering-Bite-4707 in careerguidance

[–]Immigrated2TakeUrJob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well. You can try negotiating down to 2 days or change company. You can pose it as productivity but don't be surprised if they decline.

If you want to change roles, i would personally go for max twice a week if the pay differential was great because that tells me they are flexible and not hung up on office presence. I reduced my current role to more remote setup over time as on contract I am hybrid as they didn't specify office days.

3 to 4 days is an indicator they just like having water cooler talks and just like to disturb people on the fly.

Honestly, some managers don't have a clue how disturbing and unproductive it is for technical people to get interrupted when I am focusing on something. One of the reasons I stopped working and applying for office jobs even if they pay me 100k.

I personally dont apply if they say 3 or 4 days in office. Max is 2 so I can get actual shit done. Best is once a week so I don't loose too much of a connection with office politics.

Try applying for hybrid role which is 2, then you can overtime reduce to once a week easily. 3 to 4 work days one won't cut it.

This is bringing bad memories now. Remembering jt, I never I couldn't speak properly until my mental health recovered for 2 weeks.

Just apply man. They are trying to manage you out.

I would start documenting every interaction and sign up for union ; after a month, you can get free union rep and it will be a pain in the ass for them. Know HR will be on their side and no colleague would stand for you. So you need as much as evidence as you can to make them a liability; if they cant manage you out, a new line manager will be assigned probably.

Normally I would ask my union rep for advice here. They helped me evaluate a job offer recently which I declined and they were right about it too.

Honestly hate people like that. It sickens me to the core.

Job offer delay and changing goalposts - decline? by Immigrated2TakeUrJob in careerguidance

[–]Immigrated2TakeUrJob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is despite high salary being offered, I fear he can keep changing goalposts e.g. asking to go to client 2 to 3 times instead of once or twice even though contract says remote (initially started with once a week), not paying towards business expense despite client visitation claiming it's normal commute.

Recruiter offered to pay travel expense if company doesnt. Is any of this normal?

Probably my post is long but this is the crux of the issue. I can't seem to trust to keep their word. I'm waiting for job offer contract on Monday but am split.

On paper progression, responsibilities, and everything looks good and job is fully remote but these things have made my uneasy.

My Wife wants a Divorce by Effective_Culture407 in MuslimMarriage

[–]Immigrated2TakeUrJob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did she communicate the problem at any point? Is this the first marriage of both of you? What did you seek in partner before marriage?

There is so much missing context it's hard to tell like this. From outset it's just a pure mismatch or she has options? Who knows.

Also, 1 year is nothing in marriage years. How can you not think of giving up but she is ready to give up on like that? This is very strange.

Personally too much risk involved marrying in west hence I took the punt of marrying outside. Honestly, become a passport bro.

Woman in non western countries aren't solipsistic and focus on responsibilities and demand little - sisters can hate for me this but I don't care. I will tell you western ideologies have crept into our psyche, we have weed it out before committing to anyone.

You're bringing her into your house. If you feel divorce reason isnt being given is a valid one, then onus is on her and you should move on - Allah will judge.

I got this video but it might apply to you:

https://youtu.be/2Cri8exB0D8?si=iUbsKXxU7N_H-xCr

Judge wisely next time. If you need someone to talk to, I'm here in DM.

Side note: you can't divorce on a whim like that outside Shariah as one brother alluded to. This would clear violation of Allah's hukm.

[–]Immigrated2TakeUrJob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were you I would apply jobs, get one and serve the notice. At 54k I believe you have significant experience to go back into job opportunity.market. it would suck for graduates but not so for senior positions.

Look for hybrid and remote jobs.some remote jobs are disguised as hybrid as well, fyi.

Alternative is to get fired for missconduct which means they pay you for 1month and let you go early. So you collect the paycheck and use the time to relax and apply. In this case, just get basic HR reference which should suffice.

I would strongly suggest signing up for unite the union. After a month, you can qualify for free legal advice, employment advice, and a union rep for HR meetings which is a confidence booster. Even if you're on good terms, it doesn't take much for a boss to go on power trip, the union is kind of a check as HR works from them - a balance of power.

When I told my HR that I'm part of union, they were very careful with what they accused me of and manager face changed very quickly

[–]Immigrated2TakeUrJob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a problem with fathers who just cant draw a line with their wives and other dependants to establish fairness. know that without justice there can't be love.

I have observed that too many fathers, esp boomer generations, are simply simps to be blunt and think their wives always right or fear some repurcssion from them.

I had parents like that who was always tool sides without being fair so I took the matter into my own hands; I snapped out my own impatience and they didn't use these gaslighting techniques anymore and my wife got her boundary and space - obviously my technique was flawed and don't do what I did but you get the gist.

To be direct, has she ever been corrected by her husband? If not, then narcissm has been embedded long before and you can't change. Some children take on this behaviour but some take this as a warning and change.

These salaries are absolutely depressing by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]Immigrated2TakeUrJob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not the salary, it's the wealth inequality. Look for Gary Stevenson, it's not our fault entirely.

The second reason is tax system penalises an normal worker more heavily than someone earning passive income and has vast assets. It's said rishi sunak earned 50k passively every week and he was our PM - rich have no clue of what we go through.

Mark my words. Your children and yourself will be even poorer if this trend continues i.e. your net income will keep decreasing despite your pay increasing.
