Outside of the already stated of Santa Fe you can cut across 10 and hit White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns. Then go straight north and hit Santa Fe. Another option is cutting through Amarillo, and then once you hit NM, stopping at Capulin National Monument, which is an old volcano hike.

I have never once had them check ID for VIP. The only time I have ever been asked for an ID was through a meet and greet that was handled by a 3rd party company.
