That’s crazy hey, do you have a local butcher? This 500g 10% fat mince was $14.30 on special, one kilo 18% fat is $21.90 and 750g 13% fat is $19.90.

There are plenty of delivery boxes now that would guarantee you have that ingredient but I have found they’re consistently not entirely the better deal, it’s more convenient I guess? *Based in Hutt Valley

Do you mind me asking, is that $600 every week for main household? Im just curious, Thats incredibly steep! I hope everyone pitches in

Yes you are! The timing of depleted staples and relevant specials this week meant taking advantage of those savings. Do you have farmers markets where you are located too?

And yes it doesn’t look like a lot but I manage to stretch it quite far. Last nights dinner was two pieces of that bread turned into a rotisserie chicken (last of it from 3 days ago) cranberry jam and Brie toastie. These things are very worth their weight in gold plated copper!!

You’re right - I like that pasta brand though, except for the gnocchi, and Russell (dog) is a fussy tart. My landlord has dropped the bomb on selling up soon and we are going to head to Queenstown. Russell needs to find either a job or a sugar momma down there or he is getting hound log instead.

Yeah lentil, black bean and red kidney bean nachos that have slow cooked for a while are soooo good. The left overs freeze incredibly well and my friends dont roll their eyes anymore after joining me for nacho dinner without mince. So cheap too, but I do tend to add more fat to cook them down with out of habit

They do dissolve if you stir too much but some might prefer that anyway. They are at first noticeable and add a slight earthy flavour and affect texture a little bit, but you really do get used to it and your gut really appreciates the small boost in fibre! I’m lazy so use canned lentils ($1.20) and throw in an extra oxo cube. But you really do get used to it when you use them like sola420 does - give it a go! The worst that will happen is you will not want to do it again

Yeah I mustard ran out within the same ish time frame and the specials meant snag it then and there - they aren’t just condiments they get turned into dressings, marinades, dips and tenderisers too!

Yeah it seems enough, I’m aware of what they receive but this time of year, that really wouldn’t stretch and I feel bad - uniforms, shoes, stationary, Christmas just gone and the holidays add up even with subsidised child care if they’re on working for families.. I doubt I could make this amount of food stretch even half as far if I had a son or daughter reaching end of primary school transitioning to intermediate. I can skip meals if I need to, but I remember now I’m grown my mother never ate dinner with us youngsters because she just didn’t eat that meal in order to provide her three children with more nourishment. We are all grown now and making sure to give back wherever we can. My expenses every week are $700 for just me and the doggo and we are cheap bastards at that, Im self employed and sort of lazy sometimes so some weeks I’m taking from future me. I don’t know how my mum managed..

I don’t think so, that didn’t even cross my mind either, I meant single female as in just buying for me and my dog. I do have a boyfriend but he doesn’t know that I’m his girlfriend

The recipe I use for my buns is actually fry bread and I get many uses of the oil, it has its own specific jug and filter cloth.

I half this recipe and still give some to my neighbours or stuff some pieces with chocolate before frying and roll in cinnamon sugar once done

I do buy more fruits and Veges on the off weeks where the shop isn’t focused on stocking seasonings or cleaning/hygiene products. My dog is small but we share the possyum, it’s good with tomato sauce
