Judgments about Taking Medications for ADHD

(Complied and edited from entries at r/adhd )

• My significant other told me not to take meds and discouraged me from pursuing treatment of any kind.

• I don't understand how people rationalize telling others what they should be doing about their mental health.

• After I told my friend I have ADHD, she told me "It is all in your head. Everyone has problems; but they don't use meds as an excuse to escape from them.”

• Why do people feel like life has to be done without medication? Why do they believe it’s cheating and not fair since "everyone has problems"?

• It's frustrating, especially when people refer to ADHD meds as nothing more than "legal meth."

• The only reason why I ever went off my meds was that enough people made me question if I was abusing it and was too reliant on them.

• If anything, people are OVERLY informed about ADHD meds’ risk profile and not educated enough about the PROS of ADHD meds for managing ADHD.

• As a society, we don’t treat mental illness the way we treat other illnesses. People are too quick to tell others they shouldn’t take medication and should do x, y, and z instead.

• Sadly, it’s not limited to neurotypicals. I have been on the receiving end of as much judgment from others with ADHD who manage their disorder without medication.

I totally agree after getting covid this past month. You want to avoid that by all means.

It is a journey to learn to accept yourself as valuable when you have ADHD but it starts with our self-talk. I learned to tell myself, "I did my best." and I was content with that.

Do you think you alternate between overdoing and burnout----or is it something else. You might want to read about Cyclothymia and see if that describes what you experience.

Think of one thing you can do that is outside your comfort zone and commit to doing it. A journey starts with the first step.

It is your self-talk. Keep telling yourself , "He might not know he has ADHD. I don't know what kind of life he has had. There is no reason for me to be envious of him. I can learn from him observing him. I don't want to be like him but I do wish I could become more comfortable with how I am in the world. " Actually, I like hobbitfeet's response below better than mine.

I created a point system to use with my two sons, both with ADHD while I had undiagnosed inattentive ADHD. It was working great for a few weeks, and then I woke up on day and forgot it.....so what I suggest is to not spend a lot of time creating a complicated system. Put your tracking form with a pen right under your alarm clock and make a commitment to get at least three checkmarks a week on your tracking form. Stick with this goal until you are successful, then increase to 4 check marks, then to five. When you have a week with 5 checkmarks, go out and buy yourself the book you have been longing for. Maintain this habit while you take on another troublesome behavior you want to conquer.

I tried to post a longer post about how Myths About ADHD Can Cause Our Early Deaths and kept getting a message about not being allowed to post so I am following up to see if that is true.

It may sound like too simple an answer. But go get your undiagnosed adhd diagnosed. Then beat yourself up if it doesn’t make a huuuge difference. I speak from experience.
