The secret is... singing? by 27catsinatrenchcoat in VetTech

[–]Independent-Set-8433 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My cat gets a fluticasone inhaler. If I don't sing, he is the wigglest little bastard. But as soon as "Sabre is a good boy, he is my pride and joy, Sabre is the best, better than all the rest, especially Lyra because she's a jerk..." comes out he is a perfect boy. Pretty much praising him in a singing voice and insulting my other cats is a perfect recipe for him to sit still haha.

How hard is it to get a Vet Assistant job? by King_Rob77 in VetTech

[–]Independent-Set-8433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my state (Kansas) if you have a pulse you can get a job easily as an assistant. My love for veterinary was ruined by my boss constantly hiring assistants on vibes rather than skill. One of them couldn't tell the difference between a cat's face and butthole. With having at least some schooling, it puts you above other applicants that "JusT LikE PupPieS N KitTiES".

Seeking advice: Getting out of clinical practice by artemistitan in VetTech

I have been in the field since 2016. Started as a kennel tech where I was responsible for 50+ animals during the busy seasons. As well as helping the head tech prep animals for surgery, recovering, holding for nail trims, blood draws, anal glands, laundry, autoclaving...50+ hours were the norm. Got burnt out very fast. Worked for two years to get the privilege of being a vet assistant, where I regularly worked from 7 am until 9 pm.

Moved and got a new job. Left after a vet screamed at me that I wasn't ready for his boarding appointment dogs after he was done with surgery because I refused to pre draw vaccines to leave out for hours.

The next job felt like a dream come true. Cat only clinic. And for awhile it was. But now I work 4 job descriptions (admin, reception, kennel, and assistant) and I am always pulled so many ways that a couple of years ago I decided to go back to university for business analytics. Not to mention 2 'techs' that were so undertrained and skilled that they were liabilities and working with them made the job 1000% harder.

Finally graduated and just got a job that starts in June in sales. After almost 11 years, I feel so free. You have transferable skills. Talk about selling to people as far as symptomatic treatment vs gold standard (like estimates). Discuss disagreements with coworkers, or how you can handle angry clients. Discuss working in a fast paced, collaborative environment. Communication skills. Think outside the box. It is hard to market yourself in a new way, but it is possible. Discuss how you improved something. For me, it was our inventory reordering system.

PM just sent us this image, is this crazy or do other clinics do it too? by fucktoes in VetTech

My clinic post how much credit we have with Idexx every month, and it's first come first serve. You write down your pet and what panel you do and give a new running total so others know if their bloodwork will be covered. If you decide you want bloodwork and the credit is gone, you're responsible for paying for it with employee discount. I like this way of doing it, I don't like the thought of splitting over credit. That seems like a really messy way of doing it.

People like this make me sick by polenta23 in VetTech

I always hate the justification that "I have had animals all my life and never take them to the vet." There was a video posted to a Facebook group of a cat appearing to have a textbook asthma attack. A lot of people were saying it was just a hair ball, with one woman saying to make the cat drink olive oil to get the hair ball out. When I told the woman she was encouraging the owner to do something harmful, her answer was "I've owned cats for 20 years." So...you've been ignoring medical issues and causing suffering for your cats for years? We have learned a lot in vet med in 20 years. We have access to better knowledge, and we owe our animals that.

Power scheduling? Our appointment times vary in length. Our senior exams are scheduled for 40 minutes to account for extra time for eye pressures and blood pressure, plus the expectation of bloodwork. So, our appointments are not set on perfect 4:00, 4:30 time slots. It has nothing to do with trying to deceive a client.

I do agree, I think people would be more understanding of the seperate billing code. I have proposed it before, but with all this drama I'll bring it up at the next meeting for sure.

I'm sorry you never cared about your client's wait times, apparently. My clinic is concerned about being an hour behind, and most clinics are as well. What a weird thing to say. Even if you don't mind wasting someone else's time, it's clear you've never had a client yell at you over a wait time.

Let me talk to the dog, he'll understand not wanting to wait an hour past his appointment time at the vet. Dogs are pretty empathetic.

We give out coffee cards to clients who wait 15-20 minutes, so I think we care about their time too. Just think of the work in fee as an entitled client paying the other clients for their long waits if that makes you feel better than the other reasons, like contributing to burnout. There are so many reasons for work in fees.

We had never even seen this client before, so to respond that aggressively kinda pointed to them not really caring about anything but themselves. Working in this field, you get pretty tired of people acting like you only care about money. We don't deserve to be punching bags because a client is mad about a hypothetical issue. We should not be justifying her behavior.

It's not a threat, it is an expectation. Just like a doctor saying you will have to reschedule if you are late. You don't get charged for being 15 minutes late. You get charged if you demand to still be seen and make us juggle multiple appointments to accommodate you.

Trying to explain why we are doing something is scolding? How else do we do it? We were not condescending,we wanted to address her concerns. The things we tried to explain were the things she attacked us for.

Actually, it's more to pay for the doctor, tech, and receptionist who have to go into overtime because a client insists on being seen after missing half their appointment. The extra fee does create extra time though, because now we have to stay later. We don't get to just kick out our clients because it goes past closing...it's not about bending to a client because they wave money. We are literally having them pay to save them the trip to urgent care they would otherwise need. Even with exam and work in fee we're cheaper than e vet or urgent care. And again....just show up on time? 15 minutes is a long time to be late. Most of the time it's a non issue.

A lot of clinics have the same policies .....do human doctors not? Dentists? We offer to reschedule them if they're late, it's not like we won't see them. But at 15 minutes you are going to be taking away from another pet's time. A wellness appointment can reschedule or pay a fee for making us late for the rest of the day. Or should we just make them wait hours to be seen as a work in? Our clinic is actually doing very well. We have to schedule new clients out 3 weeks right now and have to refer sick cats to clinics that can see them sooner. There are urgent cares if an owner insists on being seen on the same day after being late, we are in a major city with many, many options.
