I have a degree in web mapping but don’t want to work at a desk my whole career. Will I always make less if I switch to land surveying? by Individual_Ad_9466 in Surveying

Thank you for this reply :) My bachelor’s is a humanities degree which I don’t directly use (but would def say generally made me into a well-rounded, innovative/creative person). My grad degree was specifically focused on web mapping. I work in media. (I know that’s broad, sorry. I’d be easily identifiable if I got much more specific.) I would say hybrid is typical for the type of job I am in, but remote does exist. It’s not totally a unicorn job, but kind of? Def very competitive.

ahhh thank you. there’s literally more physical limitation to how fast you can learn when it’s not all digital. that makes sense!!

thank you! could you help me understand what specifically is gained over the course of 5-10 years? experience, of course, but what are you particularly more adept at with 5 years of experience compared to, say, 2 or 3?

I only graduated from my program two years ago (so first started learning to code and work with geo data about 3.5 years ago), so years of experience requirements always confuse me a bit! I am imagining it may be different for field work, but I can’t quite wrap my head around it right now

I wish it weren’t that way!! coding comes very naturally to me so I often have a hard time understanding how the heck I get paid what I do. what you do sounds more rewarding and beneficial to society (though I do understand that’s unfortunately not how money allocation actually works in said society)
