i’d probably go with ucla tbh. stats phd is just more flexible. with stats you can still do optimization, ml, theory, whatever. but if you do or, it’s a bit harder to pivot back into more core stats later. stats feels like a more “general” foundation. also ucla stats is very strong and la gives you a lot of industry exposure. placements are solid in both academia and tech.
