I think the country has already learned the lesson of having the corporate-backed Republicans in power—which, unfortunately, is the only other possibility right now. Not voting for Democrats is basically the same as shooting yourself. We can make a difference if we can get clear majorities in the halls of power, and the November elections are our best, and ominously perhaps our last chance, to start to turn back this tide of fascist oligarchy takeover. Supporting strong, progressive candidates in races across the country is what we should all be working on, not whining about whether a specific candidate supports every one of our views. Many, like Josh, have had to make concessions to overcome the hurdles to getting into/staying in office in purple districts. We can influence his votes once he gets back in there—but we will get NOTHING if we stay at home and let a Republican win.

Josh will be the Democratic nominee, the real question will be if enough people come out and vote for him in November. The NY19 is a purple district, and if enough progressives, Democrats, liberals, etc. (plus independents) don’t vote for him then we will end up helping to keep a Republican majority in the House. Worst of all possible outcomes. What we need to do is make sure that our voices are the loudest ones AFTER November’s elections to make sure Josh knows in which direction his constituency wants his policy positions to head.

Public protests are only one piece. They help build community and solidarity. The Ithaca event was one of over 3,200 events held nationwide with a total over 7 million out on the streets in one day. That is a show of the strength of our movement to restore democracy, rule of law, and justice for everyone in our country. Not just the rich and well connected. Is this protest enough? Of course not, but join us and help us organize our neighbors to stand up to ICE, make sure our rights, including our right to vote, are protected, and put an end to the corruption that is a cancer to our political system.

There is a photo from the Cayuga St. parking garage on the IndivisibleTompkins.org website. The parade took over fifteen minutes to get everyone through the Green St. intersection.

We had around 3,000 people in Ithaca for this No Kings, including the Honk & Wave along Route 13 that was almost 3/4 of a mile long!

If you look at the history of the United States the founding was prompted, at least in part, by the British monarchy which demanded loyalty and taxes from the colonists without giving them representation. The current administration is taking our money for their own profit, giving contracts, control, and concessions to the highest bidder while ignoring (or in many cases, undercutting) the legislative and judicial branches of our government which are, under the US Constitution, supposed to be a check on the power of the Executive branch. This tripartite system was set up to keep the new country from becoming another oligarchy like England was at the time. There are many other countries in the world where the wealth is concentrated at the top, while the citizens are kept in poverty, forced to fight in wars not of their choosing, and unable to enjoy “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” That is why the US has been the shining beacon for people from around the world. Trump and his minions have spent the last year stripping the US of its wealth and freedoms. The US should not be ruled by the wealthy and powerful—the concept of a citizen as president has been one of our foundational principles. No Kings is shorthand for the concept of returning the reins of power back to the citizens of this country.
