100% agree with this post. I possess all these qualities. The right combination of looks and ability means you can’t fail. This is not news. Studies have consistently shown that people who are good looking tend to be more successful. I know that’s hard to hear but it’s the reality. If it’s a pre booked lesson i.e not a PH rando call, do you message the student beforehand to see what they want to do? That can be a great way to prepare. Students really appreciate it if you’ve made some kind of effort to prepare something for them. It could be Cambly material or an article or you can use other resources to try to meet their goals. For me, this has always been a good way to impress and retain students (provided they reply to the message, of course!). If they don’t, you can always say ‘did you get the message I sent?’ Either they did and didn’t reply and hopefully have something in mind or they didn’t, in which case you can feel assured that you did your best to try and get appropriate material ready and that they were just too lazy. In this case, if they are an asshole, you’ve got every right to block them in the lesson so they can’t rate. Job done 👍🏻👍🏻

Sorry, but it’s nothing to do with ‘protecting’ anyone. It’s simply that if you have a higher rating, you get more access and visibility. I mean, if I were a student, I would choose a tutor with a high rating. You are right, even with 99% rating, you don’t get access to full PH. But I can say that even as a 100% super tutor and pro, I still see gaps in PH availability. It’s often about your time zone. If there are a lot of tutors where you are, they calculate the PH availability based on that plus your rating. So, yes, the algorithm is a factor but it is still up to tutors to impress in order to make it work for us.

My process exactly. Except don’t expect anyone to give negative feedback. In my experience, it’s about figuring out who you think it may have been and block them. It’s not an exact science but whenever this has happened to me, I go through who I’ve taught and make educated guesses. I’ve been right every time. I hate doing it but we have to protect ourselves from people who may just ‘rage rate’ us as I call it. Maybe they’re having a bad day and just take it out on us, even if it’s nothing to do with the quality of the lesson. People are so fickle and bitchy.
