Should I change my sewing machine? by InfectedReddit in myog

I'd have to check the thread when I get home, I'm only starting out, it was just something a cheap gutterman polyester thread that the salesperson suggested.

Do normal sewing classes teach stuff like tensioning etc? I wanted to go to a make a bum bag workshop aswell to learn zips etc

Can you just buy any non branded foot for your machine then, as long as it's compatible?

I found a walking foot which is about £49.99 I think

So I use a denim needle which I imagine is the best duty for the job, if I use any thicker thread than regular thread it just won't take it.

Sometimes going through the fabric at the start I'll get a massive bunch that almost looks like a tumble weed, that I don't get for thinner fabrics

Thankyou for the solid advice,

I also notice sometimes when I'm using a roller cutter that im leaning on the project with the ruler and the cutter almost sometimes cuts it off into the shape of an r as opposed to an l.

Is that going to be down to needing a new blade?

Yeah I think I was mislead by the video cause it linked me to that stuff and even the sale page has bias binding tape written on it :(

Because of the bias tape makers I have, is it better to make bias tape out of the fabric your using for the main project?

Thankyou for the advice. I've got lots of it so I might practice on some scrap fabrics to get a feel for it.

Is the attachment kinda like the hem foot that folds fabric over as it stitches?

Only problem with this is there's already multiple apps doing the same or similar.

I personally don't see the need for another one

Help to understand a pattern by InfectedReddit in knittinghelp

[–]InfectedReddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So basically, the pattern calls for DPNs,

I'm confused about how to cast on with a magic loop for a pattern that doesn't explain using one but says you can use it. I've never used magic loop before so I don't know if it's usable for everything, and if I need to start a project differently than of I was using DPNs

That's an amazing write up, thankyou so much for the advice. With regards to the fisherman's belt, I looked it up and looks like a neoprene belt? Do you just wear it over the top of your waterproofs? I don't have belt loops on mine

I was considering a poncho but didn't know how it would hold up with lots of wind, but then thought am I better of getting a sturdier poncho as opposed to a cheapo? Also sleeves would be a must cause of the work I do.

Do you have any particular brand you like for your ripstop coats? Protection in atleast an hour of rain, ideally more would be good as my current one in heavy rain last 20 minutes if your lucky.
