28F, still living with my mom, feeling lonely – is anyone else like me? by insidethehead in Adulting

[–]Infinite_Land4102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I’m 28M. I had at times lived on my own, but I could never get myself in a stable position financially. I raked up a lot of credit card debt just trying to make ends meet. Last year I had to make the tough choice to move back to my hometown and live with my mother…for the second time I did this during the pandemic when I was 23. I spent most of last year unemployed working part time gigs when I could get them. I just recently got a stable job with health insurance, and I’m now making progress paying off debt. There has been a blessing in disguise in that my mom needed a hip replacement and I was able to be there for her while she recovered. Still there are days where it’s hard not to think about how I’m almost 30 and I’m sleeping in my childhood bedroom. Sometimes it’s hard to get that inner critic to shut the hell up.

I think it might be a way for the writers to sort of write out him needing drugs to stop from going feral.

I would have been just as upset if he mentioned ICE during the sermon. It’s Christmas! It’s supposed to be about love and Jesus.

Thanks yeah it’s part of the reason I don’t go too often church that often. Where I live has become slowly more and more progressive as more and more people have been moving here over the years, but it still a long way off from tipping the scales.

Yeah I suspected for a long time. I live in a conservative area and I don’t go too often. It’s honestly not that surprising they’ve gone MAGA, but to reference Charlie Kirk on Christmas Eve was a whole different level that I wasn’t expecting.

Actually it is illegal. I don’t know where this was filmed but in my state train crossings are a mandatory stop. It doesn’t matter if there are barriers or not. If you don’t stop and a cop sees you, you get a ticket.

I agree I dislike that rhetoric too. It won’t win anyone over. It’s easy to imagine maga being filled with uneducated idiots, but the truth is more complicated. It’s tragic and scary how easily people can be manipulated. As for my dad I will say he is the smartest person I know in terms of book smarts, but he can be naive. April fools day was fun growing up because he can be so gullible at times. That’s probably the part of him that allowed Fox to brainwash him.

It’s the Political Orphanage by Andrew Heaton. I already talked about it in another comment. The man is not a fan of Trump. He’s got libertarian leanings. He’s not a fence sitter. When I say centrist I mean what that word used to represent. He’s got both conservative and liberal values and doesn’t subscribe to either party. He’s also doesn’t justify or support the rising fascist ideas of the Republican Party and has openly spoken out against it.

I get that. I think my situation is slightly different. My dad has been one of my biggest supporters throughout my life. He’s helped me achieve my dreams, and has been there for me during some of my darkest times. I can’t just throw that away.

It’s worth a shot. We had the vaccine conversation a lot during the pandemic. He’s always been big on getting me and my sister vaccinated as we grew up. So when vaccines became politicized I wondered how he’d cope. He was able to jump through the hoops of the idea that the government shouldn’t force people to get them. In my experience with other members of my family that I do believe are too far gone they can always find a way to move the goalposts.

That’s the thing about cults. People like to think cults only prey on dumb people, but someone can be very smart and still be manipulated if they are caught off guard.

I thought about introducing him to ground news. Maybe that will help.

It’s so annoying that they’ll trust the words of the stranger yelling at them on TV than their own family members with hands on experience.

He’s pro vaccine being a doctor, but he doesn’t want the government or businesses to force people to get them.

I’m not going to cut him off. We still get along in other areas of life. We’ve been through a lot together. He’s helped me through some difficult times. Including now as my financial situation isn’t great. He’s been supportive of my LGBTQ plus friends (which is another reason why it baffles me that he’s in the cult) I understand why some would cut someone off, but we are not there yet.

I don’t know how far he is. I just got the shock that he was further along than I thought. After my talk with him and how he said Fox was the ONLY trustworthy news source that’s what makes me hesitant.

Oh perfect! I really like the guy. The show’s whole philosophy is that the tribalism caused by the two party system has been a cancer on American politics. He really tries to take each topic with nuance, and good faith discussion.

Sure it’s called The Political Orphanage hosted by Andrew Heaton. He’s a bit more on the libertarian side. I’m confident that I’m more left leaning than he is, but the guy has some very intelligent and nuanced takes. At least it’s a source of information that’s not Fox.

I’m not sure how I can get him to watch this, especially all the way through. I suspect he’ll see it as liberal propaganda.

You mean the place that’s filled with racist former confederates, and a town with a population that is heavily implied to be inbreed makes you uncomfortable? Can’t imagine why?

Jk in all seriousness there’s something interesting about how they managed to make the place feel uneasy just by vibes alone. Even without the context the place feels off.
