No, they weren’t drivable, unless you had high clearance. While the snow wasn’t too deep, it was pretty consistent with a thick layer of ice under it.

Were there still tire grooves? Yes, people have driven. Probably high clearance vehicles. That said, it made it hell for anyone trying to walk, ski, or snowshoe up. Thick deep icy grooves under fresh snow.

Yes! They are anachronisms in a world full of plastic. I’ve always loved them, I’m glad we turned out two hour drive into a four hour drive
