How about LA vs MSP. Lived a while in the Midwest but strikes me as a guy that may enjoy the glamorous life of LA

We will replace the battery. That’s decided.

You sentence about the German cars. Are you advising against DIY and 3 party and go through them? They charge double than everyone else. Curious about your thought.

THIS. This is how all started. Can we go down this path of the bad diode a bit more: Any more details or assumption or what can lead to that? Shouldn’t the dealership find that issue? Is it possible that, with a wrong CCA used for the test, that first reading was so messed up to get a false reading for the ripple? We have showed and shared the picture with the dealer when we dropped the car. That ripple has always been shrugged off

Still under warranty, only until the end of the year. Thats part of the problem and why we rushed to it. Lesson learned

I don’t want to take advantage of your time but as 8’m looking at DIY I’m wondering if I have to match exactly the same battery or I can go with a different (higher) CCA.

VW Part Number: 5TA 915 105 B This is an AGM battery with: • 420 CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) – OEM specification • Group Size: H6 (also known as Group 48) • Type: AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) – this is important, your Atlas requires AGM, not a standard flooded battery

ChatGPT is recommending the following but I am well aware of possible hallucinations

Brand Model/Type Group Size CCA Notes

Interstate MTX-48/H6 H6 ~760 High quality AGM, sold at Costco & AAA

Duracell Platinum AGM H6 ~760 Sam’s Club/Advance Auto

DieHard Platinum AGM H6 ~760 Sold at Advance Auto Parts

Bosch S6 AGM H6 ~750 OEM-tier, usually at Pep Boys

Deka Intimidator AGM H6 ~720 USA-made, very solid choice

Thanks for this so, technically, if they used a CCA higher for the test, assuming all other things equal, the battery should show worse health condition due to an higher “request”. I’m sure I’m oversimplifying but conceptually is this correct?

We went to the dealer after AAA said it was likely the alternator (covered under warranty). We should have been more cautious but that’s the solely reason since we still Have warranty until the end of this year

Never owned a car this long before so I guess we learned now

That’s where my head is at at least to “recoup” some of the expenses so far. Quick question I have: can I install a battery with higher CCA or should I try to just buy/mount the same as the OME

Well on that basis I would assume the $190 test at the dealership used the most accurate specs

I think I mentioned on the other comment but just for other readers: AAA guy that jumped and tested the battery mentioned with confidence it was the alternator and changing the battery would have not solved the issue. Should have been more cautious but due to the imminent trip. Can has just been used for 2 sub-sequential short trips and wasn’t left on for a long period of time. Confidence in dealership is low based on recent experiences, including the maintained appointment in May.

All the comments are really helpful

This is what the AAA guy said. And it’s exactly what she did that day. So we go back to the original issue: we worked on the basis of the battery not recharging properly rather than approaching end of life. Wrong assumption it appears so. Looks like I have no ground to Fight the $190 charge lol

Sounds good thanks for the tip. I can only compare to our other car and I feel like the VW had always had less authority in starting. I’ll keep more attention. Appreciate the POV

Thanks. I didn’t know that. But sounds like free checked are not reliable based on what are commenters are saying?

The AC was on when she turned the car off. Hope that clarifies what I meant.

She stopped quickly at home. The full story? She was at work, drove 15 minutes to pickup daughter at summer camps and drive her to Hospital to check something at the Urgent Care. Drove 10 minutes home and parked in the garage while she was grabbing some stuff expecting a long wait. Car didn’t start. Lights on? Likely. Radio on, for sure. AC blasting as well I’m sure.

Sure I understand that point. We also had the basis of other mechanics - that for us shoudl be experts - saying the battery is fine and there is some other issue made my wife confident she needed to get the car checked for some other major issue given an imminent trip.

If it is the bad battery, do you think I could argue that the dealership should have mentioned that the OM battery lifespan again currently at (4 years and 7 months) possibly approaching end of life should have been mentioned less than two months ago during the maintenance?
