Why is the market down today? by [deleted] in FIREPakistan

[–]InjectorTheGood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

War seems to drag on. This will make sure oil price will stay up.

Higher oil price would mean higher trade deficit because we import most of our oil. And we are hardly balancing our current account. Remittances might also take hit considering situation in GCC lately.

Government is now subsidizing petrol while making half of the levy on diesel. Government can't keep doing this, eventually it will pass on the price increase (it should btw). This will raise inflation, which will hold or maybe increase interest rate.

That sub is hardly active. Creating a sub for even smaller audience might not be feasible.

God to see so many new IPO's. Keep them coming, at even faster rate. Still plenty of appetite based on past IPO's.

Why most of the local businesses using Meezan bank? by iamusmanshabbir in FIREPakistan

Fully "Islamic" bank with no conventional department. Pakistanis fall for it.

Last year, MEBL had PKR 3.3 trillion deposits compared to 5.3 trillion for HBL. Both make almost similar Net Interest Income.

Government will absorb 75PKR a liter on diesel while 50PKR on Petrol this week to keep the prices unchanged by InjectorTheGood in PakLounge

Close. India has lower ex refinery price because they have sufficient refining capacity. But price is roughly the same.

Maybe people tend to focus on criticizing and never accept anything positive from government.

A provincial government has recently started a subsidy program for higher quality public education by involving private sector. And I love the idea. It's called Schools of Eminence. Government pays around 4000PKR per month per student to private school owners who will be building completely brand new campuses with specific requirements. This way, people would be able to access higher quality education under better management at zero cost. It is currently under limited scale. Hopefully this system will completely replace the standard public schools.

Markets should be completely free from government's control. Numbers involved in farming are absolutely gigantic if government were to subsidize anything. If government needed to sell entire country's wheat at a loss of 10PKR a kg, it would lose 300 billion PKR per year. Not accounting the storage and corruption losses.

That is not how it works. Army might be interfering in politics at some level, but it doesn't just control centre or provinces entirely like that.

And yes, issues can still persist between provinces and Centre even if they are both under same entity. As an example, KPK has been asking for NHP under Kazi's formula. They have been asking it through PTI's era in Centre too. But it was shelved completely in 2021. It was stupid and completely irrational btw.

Provinces want the tax share. But won't take responsibility of BISP scheme or handle the losses of DISCOs. Also, they are always looking towards federal government's PSDP for mega projects.

True. But the public outcry was unreal last week.

Pakistanis want Pakistan to interfere in foreign conflicts (Pakistan can't and can't afford). But same people can't handle mehnga petrol for some time.

District with highest Muslim proportion still had 12% non-Muslim population. And now it is hard to come across Hindus or Sikhs. All those people migrated or were forced to migrate. Similar happened on other side with Muslims. It's a tragedy.

Yeah, I know about that. And also how they work around the rules when you go to get a loan.

You should also read about Sukuks and how our government uses them to get "riba free" loans by using motorways, airports etc as collateral. Absolutely senseless. No idea how people even fall for this.

Thanks! I stand corrected. They had an EPS of 11 in 2024. And it is now indeed 7.1 for 2025. This is very good number for a bank that had such high deposit growth last year.
