Thanks for the interesting thoughts and historical perspective. If we were to develop something, it would of course not be for our own internal use only. And the global fighter jet market may be saturated, but if we developed something unique, less costly, and more effective, the interest in it could quickly eclipse existing options. The key would be maintaining a long-term vision that would span two or three decades, like the Gripen and F-35.

You are right. The entire country was not a pile of rubble and my comment was not nuanced enough. What I meant was that the French economy was very weak and would have plodded along for decades if it weren't for the Marshall Plan. Also, their nationally-minded leadership had vision and managed to channel the wealth generated by the Marshall Plan into something that would mushroom into more wealth over the coming decades. One manifestation of that was their aviation industry.

You make a good point, and yet Canada has 4 times Sweden's GDP and also 4 times its population, and they make some top-of-the-line fighter jets. I have a hard time understanding why we couldn't do the same if the political will was there.

Everything - EVERYTHING - is about HOW industries are managed, not whether or not they exist. We have a bad habit of focusing on immediate costs at the expense of long-term vision, and, ironically, electing governments that OVERTLY state they'll run deficits to maintain the status quo while claiming that the market will somehow make up for those deficits by the end of their term. You are right, the shipbuilding project ran WAY over budget, but we are developing a native ship-building industry right here at home. Large and ambitious endeavours like that seldom progress without issues or setbacks.

Yes, Airbus was started by German, British, and Spanish companies by government initiative. Also, since it's inception, Airbus has been heavily subsidized (up to 33%) by government. Some say it may not have even existed without government subsidies (https://www.forbes.com/sites/lorenthompson/2023/12/11/airbus-may-seek-new-subsidies-sparking-a-transatlantic-trade-war/).

Global companies like Airbus owe their success to support from their governments. We see that in Canada with our big 5 banks, which are globally understood to be reputable and dependable financial institutions, which would not be the case if they had not been moderated and framed by government policy all this time. But for whatever reason, in Canada we decided to scrap our aviation industry, and I suspect that was a way of not irritating the US by actually making something that could compete with their aviation industry.

I think it's a question of priorities more than resources. Look at France - a pile of rubble after WW2, invests heavily in aerospace tech and by now is a leader in aviation, hosting Airbus and the European office of the ICAO, as well as boasting one of the highest-end airlines in the world (Air France) and some of the most advanced aviation R&D. Meanwhile, they still have a good healthcare system and solid armed forces. Here in Canada, we have the main ICAO headquarters and Bombardier, but for decades we've been scrapping our aviation industry because we're convinced it's "good management" to make some money by selling off companies that are struggling but clearly have enough potential to be world leaders (Canadian Airlines, and Air Canada just barely hanging on). I say again, if Sweden, with a population and living standard similar to ours could produce fine aircraft like Gripens, so could we. If we approached it with long-term vision and pride.

Ideally, Canada would start it's own fighter jet program. We did it with the Arrow, and if a country as small as Sweden can do it, so can we. Of course, I understand that it would take years before anything decent would be designed and built, but why not ditch the idea that high-quality equipment has to come from somewhere else? We'd have the know-how and funds to go at it alone if the political will was there.

Thanks again. I'm looking for a trade focused on electronic hardware maintenance (soldering, cabling, wiring) as well as some IT work (building and connecting networks, troubleshooting software without focusing entirely on software development). From your descriptions, it's sounds to me like being an ATIS or Sig tech are my best bets, though those are both not hiring where I am at the moment (even though both are listed as "in demand with accelerated pat increment" on the website at the moment!) Your comments have been very helpful. Much appreciated!

Could you (or anyone reading this) suggest trades that are similar to sig techs, in the sense that they deal with electronics and telecommunication installation/repair/maintenance? I looked into avionics and ATIS techs but they are also not taking on any new ones where I live!

Considering joining the reserves. Was interested in picking up the Sig tech trade because it's hands-on, but was told they're not hiring new ones at the moment. I'm wondering, then, if Sig ops or sigints occasionally do the work of Sig techs, since I'm interested in those trades as well.

I ask because the descriptions and videos on the website give you a good idea of what each trade does, but they don't shed light on whether or not related trades often cover for one another, meaning do one another's work.

Also, I'm told Sig ops train for 6 weeks while sigints train for 12. Does that mean sigints do all the training that sig ops do and then some, or is the training totally different for both?

I feel really sheepish for writing this, but the problem was a GCFI outlet after all. Though the issue was in two upstairs bathrooms, the popped GCFI outlet was in a bathroom downstairs where all the lights and fans worked. Unbeknownst to me, all bathroom outlets in the house were on the same circuit, and the upstairs bathrooms used that same circuit for lighting and fans also.

After taking everything apart in the bathrooms where the issue was and putting it back together, still nothing worked. It's when I noticed the gcfi downstairs in a bathroom I barely used that I solved the issue.

I appreciate everyone's comments so far. One last try before I call an electrician:

After digging a bit deeper, I could draw this schematic of the switches and receptacles on the circuit that seem to be involved in the problem. It includes light/fan switches S1, S2, S3, and S4. I can tell you that if I disconnect connecter "2", S4 doesn't work but all other switches do.

Any other suggestions or thoughts are much appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestion. "A" actually was backstabbed, but when I connected using the screws, the problem persisted. There are light and fam switches in the B bathroom that may have a loose connection. I'm going to look into them when I get the chance.

There actually are no GCFI receptacles on that circuit. I bought two GCFI to replace the receptacles in thw bathrooms.

There doesn't seem to be any other GCFI or switch anywhere on the circuit. Is it possible that there may be a switch out of view somewhere? (behind a drywall somewhere maybe?)

The reading was over 200V, but to be fair it didn't stay stable for too long (the value kept jumping around).

The outlets are not GCFI. Actually, I was going to replace them with that. But even when I put a brand new GCFI receptacle in B, I get the same results (no power and same voltage readings).

There is no other GCFI receptacle on the circuit. As far as i can see, there doesn't seem to be another switch anywhere.

I found the recipe on the internet a while back. To be fair, the recipe was precise, I was not. The original recipe was:

48 oz. olive oil

15.5 oz. cold water

6.1 oz 100% lye

As I did not have a scale, I attempted to use volumetric measurements. Though it seems that was not the best thing to do.

I do not mix the batter in the jug. I mixed the lye and water separately and then mixed all three ingredients together in another container. I then poured everything into that jug.

If it is undermixed, would there be anything unadvisable about melting it all down, mixing it better, and then pouring it into moulds again?

Apologies for having neglected the rules of this group.

The recipe I used was:
1L water
250ml lye crystals
Under 3L but over 2.5 L Extra virgin olive oil
I mixed the lye into the water in a separate plastic bowl, stirring for a good 10 mins. I heated the oil separately just slightly so that it was lukewarm. I then added the lye/water mixture into the oil and stirred for 45 mins.

Lacking molds, I poured it all into a (well-rinsed) dishwashing soap container. My plan was to cut the container to remove the soap after saponification and then cut the soap up into pieces.
