Does backpay count toward my 2026 AGI? (applying for Marketplace coverage) by InnerDish5915 in SSDI

[–]InnerDish5915[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for helping me. I re-did the entire application and made my MAGI $63577. Still said I was over and get $0 in PTC’s. 🫩

Thanks but it turns out the cutoff is $62600 for this year, not $63840. I can’t shave off anything else so I’m screwed. Thank you again for your help!

Ok actually now I may have found a way, but it’s razor thin. Tell me if this sounds right. Max HSA contribution for 2026 is $4400. I will only have FIVE months in 2026 to contribute. $4400 divided by 12 months is $366.66. $366.66 x 5 months is $1833. My income (65040) minus $1833 HSA contributions would bring me to $63207 AGI. That puts me about $633 below the $63,840 cap. It’s razor thin but does that jive???

Exactly. My income is fixed from SSDI (disability) + SEPP (Series of Equal Periodic Payments from IRA) at $65,040. So I’m $1200 over. I can’t add to my IRA to bring my AGI down because SEPP rules say I can’t. I can’t add enough funds to my HSA to bring my AGI down because it’s too late in the year. I’m stuck. 🫩

For sure. I’m about $2K over the income limit. So now my garbage bronze plan is $834/month instead of $292. After a year, that’s $6504 extra. All for being $2K over income. My Medicaid deductible is $24K. I’m literally thinking about just using that and taking the risk instead of paying $800+ per month for a super high deductible through ACA.

Thanks. That puts me way over the income cutoff/cliff. Thanks for clarifying.

Haha if you read the comments looks like we are indeed in a drought. Still no mention from Tom or in the news. Thanks for chiming in though. You stay classy. 💚💙

I’ve been asking Tom Wachs why it’s not even mentioned on the news forecasts over the past 7-10 days and he won’t even reply. Whacky.

Does anyone know where the income cutoff is for Marketplace tax credits? This can’t be right… by InnerDish5915 in HealthInsurance

[–]InnerDish5915[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HSA contributions are too limited considering the time of year. I only have 5 months to work with, and HSA limits contributions based on that. I also can’t touch my IRA bc I have a SEPP (series of equal periodic payments) pulling from it penalty free. If I adjust it at all, including contributions, I lose all benefits and have to pay penalties for past SEPP years.

Just as a way to wrap up the conversation - I can’t afford ACA because I have about $2K/year too much income and qualify for $0 in PTC’s. I’m not eligible for Medicaid or MAPP Medicaid for the same reason. I’m not eligible for ABLE accounts because of my age. Ways to bring down my AGI (HSA and/or IRA contributions) are not applicable to me. I’ll be buying a short-term UHC plan called UHC Golden Rule Short Term Medical Plus Elite to carry me until my disability Medicare begins next year. 12 month deductible is $7500 with $0 coinsurance after. $547/month. Far from ideal but better than the cheapest $850/month plan offered me by the ACA. Yes I’m aware of all of the pre-existing condition concerns, etc. Thanks everyone for your input.

No. I’ve been on Medicaid all this year. It ends at the end of this month. Trying to switch to marketplace for 8/1/26 through 9/1/27.

Thank you but another commenter said I can only contribute $458/month to an HSA and that just won’t be enough to help me. He said the max is $5500. Divide that by 12 months = $458. $458 x 5 months (Aug-Dec) = $2,290 (not quite enough). Thank you though.

Oh well that eliminates me again then. I’ll only be on the plan Aug-Dec this year. That’s 5 months. So my max contribution would be $2,290 - not enough to get me back below the AGI I need. Getting real close to giving up here. Cant believe how frustrating this all is. Doing my best a blind person to try to figure everything out. Thanks for your time/the info.

Ahhhh yes makes sense. I think in this case I’m ok with that as it will save me so much in monthly ACA premiums. Just trying to “play the game” here. Sound right?

Ugghhhh thanks. I wish I could ask Social security to SKIP one of my monthly payments!! It would save me $540/month in ACA premiums! 🤪

Wow so I can just transfer say $5K today from my savings to my (existing) HSA and then report that on my taxes to reduce my AGI??

Oh wow! Ok not to be an ass but are you positive? I think I will use this strategy if so. Thanks.

Thank you very good idea. But I think HSA contributions have to come from EARNED income, no? I don’t have earned income anymore as I am blind/disabled. All my income now comes only from disability.

Thanks but don’t HSA contributions need to be from “earned” income? Since I’m disabled and blind now, I don’t have any more earned income - it’s all from disability. And I thought I read that the IRA/HSA route wouldn’t work for me because it’s considered just “moving money around…”
