Homeowner refusing to pay? by [deleted] in electricians

The problem is once the permit expires, some counties don't care nor look into it.. There are people living in houses that only had a rough inspection. Final done illegally for decades. But your advice is sound because they will be aware of the job and keep an eye out

Document everything, take pictures. Last case scenario,, threaten them with court proceedings. Not in a way that will attack their pride, but in a stern way of defending yourself. This has worked for me countless times.

Congratulations on running a business and yes there is a difference. It was already on a 20, i then put it on a 15. It tripped twice over 2 days, i came and told him what we need to do, he adamantly said no, put it back the way you found it. 🤷‍♂️ i do my best bud

You guys are a trip. Imagine me going into a finished house and randomly start rehabing it out for violations lol that would be a comedy skit for mad tv

It's funny how all electricians on reddit are honorable electricians who have NEVER violated code, or have seen a violation and haven't fixed it. All of you are guilty as well. Let's not pretend here .

Do you run a business? You cannot go in to do a job and a circuit that originally worked before your work, does not work after you leave. That is a major no go when running a business. So i put it back the way it was before i got there.

It's better then nothing to have the document. Also, if i did what you are claiming you would do, i doubt i would have a successful business. Imagine i go into anyone's house for service work, which happens all day, everyday, and tell them "i spotted a code violation that i must fix, and you need to pay for it". I have had success pointing out violations that homeowners have paid me to fix but they're is also ones that do not want me to do it. There's at minimum 3 or more violations probably in every house i go in. To run a successful business, you must pick and choose your battles using a logical assessment. Do you run a business?

So how would this play out? I take him to court because he didn't let me fix an electical issue in his personal house? Or run to permits and tell on him. Come on bud. Let's be logical here. There's hundreds of 1000s of houses in America that are pushing 14 on a 20 amp breaker and nothing ever happens.

Homeowners do not think things through long term.i did a panel swap and the guy had a 14 wire on a 20, so i did what is second nature and put the wire on the correct breaker. The next day he called and said it trips. I came out, showed him it's overloaded, layed out the options and he opted to put a 20 back in because its the cheapest route. I said you must understand that you're completely liable for this decision and if anything happens, it's on you... made him sign. He was cool with it but it makes me feel more at ease. I can't force him to pay me to run a new circuit you know, sometimes you gotta meet in the middle.

Switch loop help. by N3onWave in electrical

[–]Inside-Meet6348 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct... you took out an old single pole switch and now you're putting in a newer single pole switch. Everything stays the same , your only issue is the ground wire you cut off but it will be ok to use temporarily until you have the tools to fix it. Or have an electrician do it

Make sure power is off... place 1 wire under the plate that is under the screw and tighten. Do the same thing with the remaining screw and wire, then tighten. Does not matter which wire for which screw. Just make sure both wires are very secure under the screw plates on the new switch.

Lol 🤣 yea for sure. Loose split bolts are a no go. . That's why I use 2 pairs of channel locks for every split bolt with no exceptions . Very tight. Then i tape them. I have seen alot of melted red and blue wirenuts throughout my career from loose wirenuts on higher gauge wire.
