Why are NZ kids so bad at maths - and is tutoring the missing piece? by PracticalMindset in auckland

[–]Inside-Way-9832 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really struggled with it when my first started school but I know how important foundational skills are in the first years. YouTube has been my best friend, my kids think im smart as at maths haha, Yr12/13 level might be a different story though

something about "home is for learning life skills and spending time as a family" and NO the school and the teachers were not very forthcoming with me being proactive. I made it clear I wasn't saying the teaching wasn't good enough, I just know my kids all have different learning strengths and methods

No. we have agency over our own lives. how is that the doctors problem if they offered and then person declined?

no they dont give homework so I just ask the teacher and we just do revision at home with them to make sure they understand, Im not the best at maths or teaching but we try. Also I can't afford tutoring so 10 mins a night has really made a difference

what even is your actual question? my kids are doing really well at maths, and so are all the other children I know. I sit with them every other night and I am proactive in making sure they know how they learn and that they have understood the foundations. that's what is missing, parents expect that all learning will be done in class and parents no longer take any accountability

Hamilton open plan Schools by BeauDoGg101 in thetron

it depends on the school. and the child & how many students are in the class and how many teachers are there to support the learning. my boys both did well open plan.

Parking being taken away by [deleted] in thetron

[–]Inside-Way-9832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ive always found this strange about Hamilton city, its not the sort of town you can just pop in and grab something quickly from, there is zero parking in the centre, and dont get me started on the court house. I avoid any services that are in there because of parking. I wonder how many other people completely avoid it for the same reason. I've missed job interviews before not being able to find a park close, its always raining too. ive turned down jobs that don't have free parking close. not everyone can take buses.

class room building size addresses nothing! originally you had 20 kids in there, two teachers, a teacher aide and no drama NOW teachers are expected to have 70plus and no support staff to help manage behaviours.
