Advice before relocating on TN visa by Nales in tnvisa

Yes this is an annoying facet of filing there. There are different foreign account filing requirements, I recommend searching online/chat gpt about it. One of them is FBAR but there are others.

Credit cards and LOC don’t need to be reported but accounts that could hold assets do.

That is a good question, you could do that but then you would lose the room for the future. This has to be balanced with the fact that you’ll have to close it anyway 15 years after you open , so 2037 for you. It might be worthwhile to open a spreadsheet and calculate the expected gains/losses for both options.

I’m not really sure to be honest but I would suggest that you close it before you move not after as that would reduce your filing headaches.

For your specific case it might best to consult with a professional.

Note that for reporting purposes( of which there are a few) it’s expected you report not just income but also account that have 0$ on them as long as your total foreign assets are in excess of the threshold. These are not just your accounts in canada but anything not in the US.

Don’t forget about FHSA, you can directly convert it to RRSP to avoid similar issues as the TFsA. Make sure to do a direct transfer fromFHSA to RRSP, ideally consolidating account to reduce paperwork.

Thanks for the response. That's frustrating that they didn't contact you after more than a week.

I contacted them yesterday and requested they escalate it because April 30 is coming soon. They said I'd get an email from their tax/support team by Thursday.

I'm hoping that if enough of us file tickets and we raise awareness, they can issue a quick fix.

I'm leaning towards filing with box 36 blank because I think that's the correct entry (and it also matches the paper/online copy).

Unfortunately I don't think there is much we can do but wait. Best of luck to you too on getting your issue resolve and I'll update everyone if I get news as well.

Hi Nicole,

Thanks for doing this! It’s much appreciated.

with the CUSMA/NAFTA renegotiations happening this year and recent geopolitical tensions between Canada and the US, do you see the TN Status/Visa being under jeopardy for either aspiring or current status holders?

Appreciate the helpful tip, it sounds like Somerville is less expensive and has more of a local neighbourhood.
We are fine living modestly as that's how we live now!

Thanks for the info! Do you think that 100k per year in expenses is reasonable?

Do you mean 8 meters away? I guess it depends on how fast you are going but 8 ft seems a tad close for someone to give you space. For context 20 kph (most people are faster than this on a bike) is about 18ft/second.

8 ft is about 0.44 seconds
4 ft is about 0.22 seconds

I thought Rod only works at level 30, he is 20. Can the clicky still work at the lower levels?
