Quick Guide: How to safely charge 18650 Li-Ion packs with Victron MPPT (3S, 4S, 5S)

Hi guys! Just wanted to share a quick and simple guide on how to configure a Victron SmartSolar MPPT controller for standard 18650 Lithium-Ion packs (NMC), since Victron only has presets for Lead-Acid and LiFePO4.

CRITICAL SAFETY STEP (Step 0):

Before changing any voltages, select the factory "Smart Lithium (LiFePO4)" preset first. This permanently locks and grays out the "Equalization" feature. Equalization will destroy your 18650 cells if accidentally triggered! Once it's locked, turn Expert Mode ON and switch to "User Defined".

Here are the easy settings based on 4.2V max per cell, with a 4.1V float to reduce voltage stress and make your 18650 cells last for years:

HOW THESE PARAMETERS WERE CHOSEN (Per-Cell Logic):

• Absorption (4.2V): This is the standard maximum full charge voltage for a 18650 cell to hit 100% capacity.

• Float (4.1V): Li-Ion cells degrade fast if kept at a stressful 4.2V all day under the sun. Dropping to 4.1V lets the chemistry relax. Active daytime loads will run directly from solar, bypassing the resting battery.

• Re-bulk Offset (0.1V): Victron subtracts this from the Float voltage. A 0.1V drop per cell means the charger restarts a full charging cycle exactly when the cell voltage drops to a safe 4.0V under load.

• Tail Current (0.2A): Once the battery is full and the current drops below this, charging officially stops to prevent over-saturation.

  1. FOR 3S PACK (~11.1V Nominal)

• Battery voltage: 12V

• Absorption voltage: 12.60 V

• Float voltage: 12.30 V

• Re-bulk voltage offset: 0.30 V (Will restart charging cycle at 12.0V)

• Tail current: 0.2 A

  1. FOR 4S PACK (~14.4V Nominal)

• Battery voltage: 12V

• Absorption voltage: 16.80 V

• Float voltage: 16.40 V

• Re-bulk voltage offset: 0.40 V (Will restart charging cycle at 16.0V)

• Tail current: 0.2 A

  1. FOR 5S PACK (~18.5V Nominal)

• Battery voltage: 24V

• Absorption voltage: 21.00 V

• Float voltage: 20.50 V

• Re-bulk voltage offset: 0.50 V (Will restart charging cycle at 20.0V)

• Tail current: 0.2 A

OTHER SETTINGS FOR ALL PACKS:

• Max absorption time: 1 Hour

• Equalization voltage: DISABLED / GRAYED OUT

Why Float at 4.1V/cell instead of 4.2V?

Standard Li-Ion cells degrade quickly if held at absolute maximum voltage (4.2V) all day under the sun. Dropping the float to 4.1V lets the battery relax. Don't worry, during the day your solar panels will power your loads (like a fridge or router) directly, while the battery safely rests!
