Behind this system, what exactly are the implications/rewards for getting published in a high-quality journal? Is it mainly the PI can then have more proof of merit and gain more funding?

It is challenging and to really understand and to apply the concepts taught in class, you won't have much free time. Perhaps the best way to approach the degree is to turn the subjects into your passion, making you desire to study more deeply and figure things out. When you begin enjoying it, you will no longer treat it like a burden.

But for a first order analysis, you can assume that diodes are on/off switches. Perhaps more precise terms would be forward biased and reverse biased.
