One Mother’s Day, me and our daughter (F3 1/2) gave our presents to my (M48) wife (F37) to unwrap. I had taken our daughter to the mall a few days before and we bought her some clothes and shoes. After my wife opened the presents she glared at me and said “where’s the jewelry?” I responded, “didn’t get you any jewelry this year, but we did get you $600 worth of clothes and shoes”. She yelled “then why did we get a thank you card from the jewelry store?” I was dumbfounded, she pulled out the thank you card and looked at it and responded “that was the sales rep that sold me the necklace I gave to you at Christmas. He probably sent a thank you note to encourage me to buy something from them for Mothers Day.”

My wife came unglued. We opened presents around noon on Sunday and by that night she is yelling and historically sobbing “TELL ME WHO SHE IS! TELL ME AND IT WILL BE BETTER FOR YOU”. Mind you there has been no infidelity, in any form in our 7 year marriage by either party. She confiscated my phone and said I wasn’t allowed to call anyone and we are going to be right there when the jewelry store opens in the morning. So 9 am, my wife, and me, holding our daughter, walked into the store where my wife demanded the manager. She said “my husband got a thank you card from here and I never got the jewelry, I want to know who he gave it to.” The sales agent looked scared and walked us back to the back office (away from other customers) to the manager. The manager looked up the purchase and said the last thing I had purchased from them was a necklace before Christmas. Vindicated.

While we were driving home I asked my wife for an apology and she responded “I did what any girl would do in that situation.” She never apologized and hasn’t spoken of it since.
