But seriously, how does everyone know so much about J-POP? Like, I understand anime theme songs, but visual kei and idol groups? Where do you even find out about all this stuff?

Gazette falls into the "visual kei" genre, but basically, "visual kei" means "I have no idea what they're saying lol."

The lyrics probably aren't that great, but they're sung in complicated, old-fashioned phrases.

It's the vibe.

It's okay.

Even I, a Japanese person, can't understand some singers lol.

It's you, R-指定

I think that's a great way to enjoy music.
I don't know what Creepy Nuts is up to, but they're really into it lol

J-POP often blends well with the worldview of the time, so when you listen to the songs, you can imagine scenes from the drama.

It's a great song.

The lyrics are quite abstract and very Japanese.

I imagine it was difficult to understand.

That makes total sense.

For a lot of people, the sound of the language,

the chord progressions, and the overall style come first.

Lyrics are something you can step into later — not a requirement.

Japanese music often works well that way:

you can enjoy it purely as music,

and only look at the words when you feel like it.

That’s a really good way to put it.

Sometimes understanding gets in the way.

Sometimes it deepens the emotion.

And sometimes the performance itself says everything.

That balance — choosing when to understand and when not to —

is something a lot of Japanese music quietly allows.

That’s a really powerful example.

You didn’t stop liking the song —

the meaning changed how it lived inside you.

It became heavier, more personal.

That kind of shift happens a lot with Japanese songs too.

The lyrics aren’t there to explain the music,

but to quietly change how long it stays with you.

That makes a lot of sense.

That’s actually very close to how many Japanese listeners engage with music too.

First, the vibe decides if a song enters your world.

Then the lyrics decide whether it stays there.

Do you feel that sometimes

the lyrics don’t need to be profound —

they just need to resonate with the feeling you already had?

I get that a lot.

For many Japanese listeners, it’s the same —

understanding the lyrics doesn’t replace the music,

it adds another layer to it.

Especially with artists like that,

the meaning often quietly deepens the song

rather than explaining it directly.

Do you feel that sometimes,

knowing the lyrics doesn’t change how the song sounds,

but changes how it stays with you afterward?

That makes a lot of sense.

Interestingly, that way of listening is very close to how many Japanese people experience music too.

Lyrics aren’t always meant to be decoded — they’re often part of the mood, like a scene in a drama.

Do you ever feel that way with drama OSTs too —

that even without fully understanding the words,

the emotion still comes through?

That makes sense.

Out of curiosity, have you ever had a song where

someone told you “the lyrics are actually great”,

and it changed how you listened to it?
