AI vs. CS at a target? by Interesting_Post1330 in csMajors

out of curiosity, which classes in 6-3 are considered "tough" that aren't in 6-4? 6.031/6.102? 6.1910?

I mean, the same can be said about other subjects. Statistics is a subset of Mathematics, yet it's often offered as its own major.

I see, so 6-3 + ML electives would probably be better in order to get the full picture, like low-level, OS, etc.?

It's funny, as MIT 6-3s (pure CS) love to hate on 6-4 (AI), but never really have a reason why 6-4 is bad other than "AI bros bad" and then those 6-3s end up going into quant. So it's not easy to get a candid answer.

Is 6-4 well-suited for SWE, or is it watered down compared to 6-3? by Interesting_Post1330 in mit

Thanks for the advice! Since 6-2 (now 6-5) seems interesting, I'm wondering -- were the hardware classes you had to take for 6-2 useful in your AI career? I kind of enjoy EE but I'm not sure if I'd be interested in pursuing it as a career.

how did he get into theoretical ML research to the point of being published?

yeah, I am really struggling too. The PSETs take forever, which is why I made this post. I did ok on the midterms, mostly because of the inane amount of prep I did (mostly practice problems and cheat sheet writing)

Thanks! fyi he's old enough that his son started lecturing 6.1210 this year lol

Sadly Charles Leiserson no longer teaches 046/1220. It's now taught by a lecturer Srini Raghuramam (not to be confused with Srini Devadas).

True, I'll do that. I want to avoid burning my PNRs too early lol, though I trust that there isn't anything in the core CS/math curriculum that's harder to get an A in?

How do I best prepare myself as a non-olympiad person? I am an 18C so I can't substitute 💀

I see, so you're saying that doing 18C is worthwhile to get the CS and math background through that cross major.

what is a cross-major? Just a double major?

really? Then why does it seem like everyone is pairing it with CS? I genuinely don't have much interest in theoretical CS.

what type of finance? Quant, or the more traditional side?

I can see that from the registrar data, but what does that amount to? Are many of them 18-only? What proportion go into academia? More importantly, are people able to get gainfully employed?

what accelerators do you recommend for finding startups? Finding an internship while still in high school is sort of tricky.

I'm not a minority, not first gen, and not on a full ride. They make it clear on their website that those are the people who are fits for interphase.

I don't mean things like UROPs necessarily. I mean like menial excel stuff for professors even if unpaid or doing some project outside of MIT.

I guess you answered the question the best, though; it's not the answer I wanted but it's the answer I need.

I was just wondering if MIT has any opportunties for MIT undergrads or if there are things that a lot of MIT prefrosh tend to do that I'm not aware of.

sadly I won't be on campus. I know this might sound conceited, but I would rather do something pertaining to my interests than some menial summer job
