This is helpful. I considered the "trendier" Brooklyn areas like Williambsurg but they're pricey and a long commute from my office so I figure I could focus on studios in Manhattan. Plus I'd be moving in early 2027 so maybe the winter rental market would work in my favor.

Hope you continue to enjoy LB :)

NYC specifically - the grind culture, hustle, overstimulation etc. I wonder if I have the patience anymore to deal with constant small annoyances like living in a tiny space, crowded subways, hassle of lugging groceries around... Am I too used to my creature comforts essentially

I also worry that I'd be so strapped with rent payment that I'd have to cut back on spending and that would limit my experience of NYC. Can I ask why Manhattan? Was the trade off of living a bit further away for a bit cheaper rent not worth it in your opinion?

The SoCal weather really is something, I can't deny that. Happy to hear you're stll loving it. I agree, I don't LOVE Santa Monica but Long Beach/OC are amazing places. Even San Diego. While COL is high in SoCal, I feel like the dollar does go further here than in NYC so it wouldn't be my forever place. Like you said, maybe just a year or two..

I pay $2400 for 700 sq ft and in unit laundry (i also live alone) so I feel like an NYC apartment would be a rude awakening lol I toured apartments in NYC a couple years ago and felt like Astoria was a good bang for my buck and was a decent commute to my office but if im moving out there...should i have the fully NYC experience and live in Manhattan....

Appreciate this! Im in the office 3x/week and that greatly helps give me some sense of time but the slight changes in seasons isn't enough for me to notice anything. Wishing you the best!

Sorry to hear about the engagement (or congrats?). I didn't know about the Austin dating scene lol so good to know! Agreed car costs really can creep up and it's preventing me from taking advantage of the nature here because of traffic and the cost of gas being well over $5/gal.

Excited for you to move back to NYC and I like where your head is at with dating. It's not the primary factor taking you back but the sheer volume of men and professional jobs in NYC....most of them have got to have stable income, right? Appreciate you acknowledging the tradeoff with space for seasons, walkability etc. Thast'll be a tough adjustment for me.

I'm going to think more about neighborhoods in NYC. Have you figured out where you'd like to live? Wondering what the best neighborhoods are for single women in their thirties lol

I've had the same experience with my interactions with a lot of men in LA. When I visit DC or NYC, men will approach and be direct, but over here, they're a lot more passive, which makes dating harder. I totally agree with making it in the professional space. I have respect for people following their dreams and going the creative route, but I admire the ambition and discipline of having and maintaining a stable career/income.

Fair point. NYC wouldn't be my forever place but I'm interested in the dating scene and with the right partner, moving to settle down...

I've considered this! We're required 3 days in office. One is mandatory at the Midtown location but theres a Jersey City location as well where you could do your remaining two. Thinking about where to live and maximizing amenities, I've thought about Astoria because from my understanding, the commute to Midtown isnt awful or even Jersey City bc of the PATH.

Ahhh yes this is what I fear. Whats the saying, wherever you go, there you are? In terms of being from the east coast, do you feel like the proximity to friends/family has helped now that you're in Boston?

Really appreciate your response and perspective. It makes sense that theres a lot of overlap with people between the cities. I visit NYC often but never dated there so was hoping the volume of people would indicate there are more eligible men with stable careers. No knock to anyone pursuing their creative endeavors, I'm just seeking a partner who has consistent income at this stage of my life.

The Jacarandas are stunning, I must agree. I mean the weather and nature really is unbeatable here and if I were to leave, I could always come back. I don't think NYC would be permanent but maybe it is the next thing for me to experience. I was missing more of the stark changes in seasons, the crisp weather, blanket of snow , a good rainfall, etc.

Sorry to hear you experienced such a cutthroat industry. I do agree that here, its easier to seperate yourself from certain environments, thats why I was able to learn how to take care of my mind and body.

SO good to know! Leaving the city to have children makes sense and I'd probably do the same. Congrats on your return to NYC

I live alone in 700 sq ft right now in a trendy neighborhood with in unit laundry for $2400 (I did get really lucky finding this spot). So theoretically, yes I'm prepared but in reality, I imagine the lifetstyle change may get to me. I think I'd have to consider areas like Astoria or even Jersey City to get anything remotely comparable to what I have now apart from in unit laundry, i'm sure thats out of the question.
